Reid vs Saleh is the big coaching matchup (over Kyle vs Spagnuolo). Saleh's going to have to come up with the gameplan of his life. No idea what he'll do but I think he needs to continuously mix it up so Reid/Mahomes never has a beat on what's about to come. Man, zone, blitz backed up with man, blitz backed up with zone, rush only 3 - just mix it up for the sake of mixing it up. Break away from tendencies all the while being assignment sound.

Reid was able to counter both Crennel and Vrabel. They stayed in defenses too long, IMO. BB in the 2nd half when they played them, mixed up man and zone and Reid couldn't get a peg on what they were going to do and Mahomes isn't a sophisticated enough QB to handle the full field reads from the pocket.
I do not fear them

You making that statement is pretty comforting. I was going to ask what did Bill Belichek do last year. Clearly the Chiefs still put up 30+, but I think Kyle can call a game where we can put up 30+ on them. The question is the right mix of ball control to slow down the game, give us a TOP advantage (I seriously would like us to have a 2 to 1 advantage in this category), as well as a stop here and there, holding them to FGs, and as you said, mixing up the coverages.

If we rush four the whole game, we lose. Mahomes +reid > rogers + lafleur.
If we stay predictable we wont win.
Totaly agree with the points already made.

They have to keep Mahomes in the pocket.

As long as Saleh adjusts quickly we should be good, like the first Rams game after that opening drive where LA widened out the tackles to further widen our wide 9. Saleh adjusted the very next drive. He's capable of doing it for sure.Originally posted by jonnydel:Originally posted by thl408:Reid vs Saleh is the big coaching matchup (over Kyle vs Spagnuolo). I don't think we need to have acorn head put his brain into overdrive... just focus on what we do best, which is stop the run and rush the passer, and let the stats based on tendencies play in our favor,,, this is what Saleh does best... you gotta dance with who brung ya

This is a couple months old, but is pertinent again now that the defense is healthy.

Check out how the hoodie doubled Tyreek. I don't think the 49ers have this call in their playbook. In fact, the only people I've ever seen run this coverage are Belichick and Saban.
Bill Belicheck really is the goat. Lol Look how he doubled Tyreek Hill here. pic.twitter.com/zF6xLQoJkg

This is an article from Nov 2019. It talks about how NFL defenses are using Cover4 (Quarters) to combat the spread looks that NFL offenses are starting to use more and more. If the 49ers do not fear the KC's rushing attack, and really want to put a lid on the KC offense and keep things underneath, Saleh might go to it more instead of Cover3.
https://www.sharpfootballanalysis.com/analysis/nfl-defense-2019-quarters-cover-4-san-francisco-49ers/
No defense in the league this season has used Cover 4 more than the San Francisco 49ers, who are tied with the Carolina Panthers for most pass snaps with the coverage. If teams want to see what the best-case scenario is while using Quarters, they should look no further than San Francisco.
The 49ers have allowed a league-low 54.6% completion rate with Cover 4 and have allowed just 5.31 yards per attempt. San Francisco's defense has also seen a boost in the pass rush with Quarters — a 13.8% sack rate and a 39.6% pressure rate, both above the already impressive overall numbers of a 11.6% sack rate and 30.4% pressure rate on all plays.

I didn't realize we ran that much quarters. Interesting. And with success!
