I think the next step for this defense is to acquire CBs that can play man to man. They've been using so much zone in this scheme the past three years. Last season they expanded their variety when it comes to zone coverages, but were still a very heavy zone defense. It's time to add man to man coverage to the toolkit. If ARI is on the come up as a division contender, then being able to play man is even more important since they are not shy about playing 4 WRs, spreading things out formationally, and running RPOs to expose a stretched out defense. Playing man coverage is a good answer to RPOs.
If this defense can keep up the good pass rush while being able to play both zone and man effectively, then they can approach each game with a specific gameplan and keep offenses off balance. If a QB has trouble reading zone, play zone. If a QB has trouble throwing into tight man, play man. If it's a vet QB that has seen it all, then mix things up to keep them guessing.

Here's another vote for that.

Huh? You are saying in his first draft as a GM that he used his very first pick as a favor . Some of the takes here are mind boggling. Thomas was universally thought of as a top 5-10 pick according to every expert, and in 99% of every mock.

Absolutely agree. Most of the big plays we gave up were when one player didn't get over to cover when the other left the receiver. It's a lot more complicated to play a zone correctly than a man to man but you have to have the athletes to do it. When Sherman was at Seattle they had the athletic guys to play man but he's a little slow now so he can't do it as well.

True. Sherman is still great in zone but the SB demonstrated he was not quick enough in man coverage. Witherspoon I thought was coming around early in the season but when he came back he had forgotten to go for the ball. It was like he had fallen on his head or something. We definitely need 1 if not 2 good rookie CBs. Sherman will be fading and I dont see more then 2 more years from him if we are lucky. Still loads of respect for the man though.

While CBs are a large interest, esp if one is great AND tall, Ss, LBs...all important. As noted above Tony Oden is joining the. DBackfield coaching staff but not as a DBacks playcaller. Joe Woods was as good as we thot, and was rewarded (or maybe penalized ) by DC at Cleve.
Tony O tho has a nice little bunch of pro coaching experience in backfield, starting at Texans, where he coached with Coach Saleh, and then at N.O under Payton, followed by stints at Jax, Bucs, Det, and now here. May have missed one and he did have a fair amount of collegiate coaching also. He was evidently a DB at small college school.
We had a guy who we could use a marker against, Joe W while DC up at DEN, and DB coach elsewhere. Tony O, young, must be bright or JL /kyle wouldn't have even given him an interview. Now we see what he has learned adn what he can bring to our DBackfield. We have Aces at LB coach with Saleh, and Kocurek at DL coach. The CBs and Ss are our biggest weakness on D so i am anxious to see if Tony O brings us some new life at DB. Joe Woods is a tough pair of shoes to fill.
Pretty certain we won't be starting TC on time, but when we do, i hope to see our DBs getting superior coaching even with Joe W gone. It is obvious what our needs are...cover corners and you first have to have the talent for it. Question is ...do we? And welcome Tony O.

Is he the reason this regime feels compelled to spend so much draft capital and cap space on defense year after year?

I'd say no. Shanahan is all about building defense first
Why my favorite pick in the 1st round is Javon Kinlaw @GamecockFB @nfldraft @nflnetwork pic.twitter.com/q6hyPZ2sup

I think their focus is on keeping an elite defensive line, OT, and C. I don't think the defense will ever be set. Next year we will need CBs and possibly a SS and DE.

No, Crocker is pretty annoyed by it (like I am about pass protection). We went an entire trade, free agent and draft period without adding any talent to either.
He's not only concerned about this year but especially next year. He wants some talent in this year to train for next year.

Isn't Crocker the one who didn't get the Bosa pick cause we were fine on the dline .
I swear some of these 49er podcasts have a very narrow minded way of looking at the rosters. I like what KS is doing much more than what many posters or media members on here would want. And that hasn't always been the case.
