Last offseason there was so much more discussion about changes to the 49ers defensive scheme. The safeties were talking about how their positions were interchangeable, and we were talking about how the wide9 would affect the DL and LBs. This offseason hasn't had much chatter regarding scheme changes/tweaks. Kind of boring on this front imo. "If it ain't broke...."?

Remember what Ward said. Probably not going to talk much with no preseason games, let the opponents figure it out.

Let's hope for some new S and DB wrinkles. More man too.

This is from Matt Barrows mailbag (The Athletic, 8/25):

Question: How is the new defensive backs coach approaching the secondary? Are the 49ers simply teaching the overall scheme or did he bring new ideas to the position?
Barrows: The 49ers definitely have a new wrinkle(s) under new defensive backs coach Tony Oden. Again, this is the very thing the 49ers are most leery of revealing. But it's a good question and something that will be worthy of a story after the Week 1 game against the Cardinals.
------------

So there are obvious adjustments to the scheme that Barrows is not allowed to reveal. I am excites.

I have heard multiple beat writers report that Sherman has been lining up at RCB on occasional downs. In 2017, Saleh played his CBs as boundary and field CBs, not RCB/LCB (weeks 1-4). Perhaps that's the change? Guess we'll see week 1. Barrows mentions that it's worthy of a story so that adds suspense. Can't wait.

yooooo. This video was just uploaded 2 hours ago.

I know I know. Just watch it for the info. At 1:10 mark of the video: "They are moving Richard Sherman around". I doubt that Sherman is shadowing a certain WR. What I think Sherman is doing is playing the boundary.

Hey, I heard on a pod, IIRC, that noted they really want to try Verrett out at his natural left side to give him a fair shake and to properly evaluate him. But perhaps this seems more related to scheme advancement!

Not sure what you mean by that, held Wilson in check twice last season, would've won the first time if the 9ers didn't have a rookie kicker. Beat Kyler Murray twice. Held Lamar Jackson in check, what did he have a whopping 17 points against the 9ers.
nothing to worry about Saleh, no one wants him and he'll be here to stay ..

It's a start! ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Number one defense according to some accounts. The Big Acorn gets no respect.

Why wasn't this the case pre Bosa?
