The way BUF used Goodwin was as an undersized X (split end). Otherwise known as the weakside WR, that is not a part of a route combination. The proof is in the film and also that PFF stat that said 90% of his targets were on vertical routes/curls/deep Out. Those are exactly the kind of routes ran by an X. Not drags, slants, digs, etc. Re-watch the 49ers/BUF game to see this in action.
I watched all the Goodwin vs RR snaps from 2016 when RR was in man coverage and didn't feel like Goodwin got the better of RR. I had it at 4 to 4 with RR winning on most times that Goodwin went vertical. Goodwin had more success on non-vertical routes (curl/Out) than he did on vertical routes.
He was targeted twice with RR in man coverage. One was on a Go route where Goodwin had just about half a step. Pass was bad but I gave that win to Goodwin. The other was completed for +15 but it was 3rd and 24. Gave that win to Goodwin too.
