LB Malcolm Smith's deal w/ SF a strong one: Five years, $26.5 million with $13m guaranteed, source says. (Up from his $3.5 per year w/ Oak.)

That's a 5.3 million avg for a guy who's had over 100 Tackles each of the last two years who fits a need and has experience in the system we what to implement. I think it's more than fair.

I had him around $4M coming in. Again, the MARKET sets these contracts...not a lot of wiggle room for 95% of FA's.

TK noting it's really $4.3M a year.

4M is pretty close to what his "real cap pay" is.

I would disagree.

I think the annual salary is okay. Not digging the 5 years. If he can be cut after year 3/4 with insignificant dead cap that would be good.

That's the key...need to see if this one was front loaded as well. Most of these contracts look like 2-3 year REAL deals.

I think it ends up being similar to Torrey Smith. 5 for $40M turned into 2 for $16. A lot of contracts are being constructed this way. It isn't that bad of a contract

Sound logic. Thus far we see a trend with Shanalynch (Lynchshanity for the Asian peeps) draft talented key support players that know their system on both sides of the field (Malcolm Smith, Logan Paulsen, Brian Hoyer) to facilitate the transition. I'm loving the other skill position signings as well.

cut brooks and cash out on hightower.. where will lynch play? DE?

seems like Lynch will be the LEO DE, they did try to trade for Conner Barwin-and since he's now a FA they can try and sign him. SAM LB has to be able to set the edge, stack/shed the TE, and cover TE or RB if needed. Hightower probably can fit the bill here.
I think Smith adds value just because he has been in that Seahawks defense so he knows how it should look like. I think we overpaid but he still fits our scheme... something Baalke did not understand tbh.
