To be clear re: Smith's deal, I'm less concerned about the deal itself (it won't hurt them) and more concerned about what it seems to imply…

about their commitment to him as a player and his expected role.

By giving Smith top 5-8 gtd money at the position, that seems to imply they expect him to be the answer at that position

LB Malcolm Smith's deal w/ SF a strong one: Five years, $26.5 million with $13m guaranteed, source says. (Up from his $3.5 per year w/ Oak.)

Way overpaid...
That's a 5.3 million avg for a guy who's had over 100 Tackles each of the last two years who fits a need and has experience in the system we what to implement. I think it's more than fair.

Sound logic. Thus far we see a trend with Shanalynch (Lynchshanity for the Asian peeps) draft talented key support players that know their system on both sides of the field (Malcolm Smith, Logan Paulsen, Brian Hoyer) to facilitate the transition. I'm loving the other skill position signings as well.

Only 13 million guaranteed and his signing bonus.. The rest is incentive laiden "air/fluff"... so real deal is 5 years for @ $13-$15 million.. HE'S GONNA MAKE THE SAME $$$$ HE MADE W/ RAIDERS @3.5 Million a yr.. C'mon guys you knew this..

Would you say the contract is... hard to swallow?

Smith, 25, takes greatest satisfaction from his ongoing ability to deal with achalasia, a rare disorder that affects around one in 100,000 people and makes eating a painstaking and uncomfortable process.
It regularly takes Smith more than an hour to complete his meals, which is why he usually finds a lone spot at the lunch table and does his own thing. Achalasia impedes the swallowing functions of the esophagus, causing sufferers to regurgitate mid-meal, even with taking measures such as a special chewing technique, using tiny bites and avoiding certain foods.
I think this deal spells the end of Hodges returning. Our LB depth chart now looks like:

SAM – Brooks/Harold
MIKE – Bowman/Armstrong
WILL – Smith/Armstrong

That is not a terrible place to be going into the draft. But there is still room to add a guy like Hightower who can play the SAM and the MIKE.

Would love us to try and re-sign Hodges.

Yeah this shows he's a good fit for our system given how he did in Seattle. Saleh was quality control there so he knows how Smith fits

TK noting it's really $4.3M a year.

Heck, im thinking when u factor in the amount of guaranteed $13M and his signing bonus, It looks like $3.5 million(same as Raiders paid him).. But even at $4.3M, dats an $800k raise for a guy that knows the defense and has been productive.. Still a GREAT signing IMO

IDK, Im thinking moreso Brooks than Hodges.. Hodges can back up and fill in for Bowman at MIKE..

same here, Zach Brown is still on my wish list

Brown is gonna cost some money, I much rather use the cap space to try and sign Terrelle Pryor .

We still have $96M less Malcolm Smith's deal which I'm projecting to be around $4M anyhow. We good!

#SignEveryone!

Wait, after hitting up 5 free agent they still have $96 million?

Oh, how sweet it is!

And all of these are front loaded contacts. For instance, Kyle Juszczyk, has $7.5 paid up front so from years 2-4, it's only a $4.5M hit. Garcon, same concept. In fact, all of these contracts will be structured in a similar manner. A potential, $121.5M is an insane amount of cap space and can be stretched out sooooo many ways.

We haven't made a dent so far!

YES!!!!!! and this !!..
