This was my only real questionable signing (moneywise).
He's a subpar talent imo good depth but nothing more.

That's a pretty good deal for us. He's at least solid veteran stop gap starter. Knows the scheme, good veteran presence and has won a lot of games in this league. Good pick-up.

What is the breakdown of his 5 year deal? Here's to hoping Malcolm comes back into his own playing in a system he's familiar with. I also think he'll be going back to the same position he played when with the Seahawks, where he had 2 really good years there.

Pretty much this. Remember he's the guy that caught Sherman's deflection in the end zone in the 2013 NFCCG. Right place right time kind of player. Nothing wrong with that.

Pats have built a dynasty on guys that run 4.6's but know what to do

As a former football coach I lived by this and other coaches will say this very same thing...
Give me 11 guys that don't run fast but know exactly where to be and I'll beat the fastest team in the league any day of the week.

Yea this is really a shaky siginig. I understand he knows the sytem, but he's just been a barely average player. For the money probably one of the worst signings league wide.

You guys keep talking about subpar talent as if the niners are just overloaded with great players. First of all, the whole entire Raiders defense was s**t. It wasnt like he was some obvious weak point. Bowmans looked out of place on certain plays. Itll look like he made some huge mistake. Then the film gets broken down and its apparent that it wasnt a mistake, or Bowman wasnt out of place, he was simply trying to make up for some subpar player around him.
Im not saying hes Bowman or any where near that, but playing around other bad players tends to bring your level of play down a bit too. Football is the epitome of a team sport and it makes things 10x harder on an individual when others around them are making mistakes.
Smith might come in and play like he did on the Raiders, but the bottom line is that subpar play is still probably better then what weve had these past few seasons. I havent been following all our roster moves so Im not 100% sure whos still signed but Ill say this: Wilhoite is garbage. Skov is garbage. RayRay may be decent but the sample size is too small. Hodges aint that great either. And please dont complain about the money. It wasnt a huge contract, and we have more then enough to spend right now.
Lets all hope he comes in and is the Smith from the Seahawks and not the Raiders.

Word. He's no different than any of the other FA's we brought in...he was brought in to play and help implement the 4-3 under. He can play both the SAM and WILL and will go back to playing in a system that is automatic for him and one where he had the most success before signing with the Raiders who run a different system and one that clearly didn't work well for all the defensive players there. We'll see how he does here but playing in the right systems is massively underrated.

I think Smith will do fine if they don't ask him to do too much in coverage. That was supposedly where he struggled most in Oakland. Offenses could try to target him. Maybe on passing downs sub him out for Armstrong or Tartt.

Idk if this has been asked/answered yet, but does anyone have his PFF numbers from when he played on the Seahawks?

Great post.
And that is the exact reason why Derek Barnett and Ryan Anderson would make excellent 49ers

This is the only signing that I don't like and bothers me. He's just not that good of a player. He's an average starter at the very best and he got paid like a good starting LB. I don't get it. I don't know what Lynch and co. saw or like in this guy besides the face he is familiar with Saleh and the defensive scheme...
