making a simple tackle. our great off season free agent signing. . of course lynch gets a pass for shelling out so much money for a scrub cuz he gives a nice interview and he is not trent

Hopefully, some day, Lynch will sell his soul to the devil to acquire the ability to foretell the future. Then he would have known we would be getting Foster as well as known Smith would go down with a major injury early.

I mean, I don't know about you guys, but I remember being livid about our GM bringing in a player his DC coveted for his scheme especially after watching the epic play of Wilhoite and that horrendous 8th string white special needs team dude play as a tandem all year together.

I mean, come on. Even we, as lowly fans, knew better esp. after reading cciowa's posts back then.

Hey, being a crappy GM gets you places in the NFL. Just ask Baalke.

It was a bad signing, but him getting injured has nothing to do with it being a bad signing.

Malcom Smith is a scrub but I actually don't think it was a bad signing. We had a gaping hole at the WILL at the time and we don't owe him a dime after next season. The injury won't matter much as long as Foster stays healthy. We'll be ok

Yes, we're ALL stoked about it...we just organized a parking lot party!

Just giving you a hard time. So, what was your plan back on March 8th? Was there another LB in free agency you thought would be better for this new system? Cheaper? Who'd come to a 2-win team?

See his 2016 PFF rank above. Raw stats rarely tell the story when it comes to defensive players given how significantly a player can impact a play (negively or positively) without touching the ball or ball carrier.

His grade on PFF was 46 which falls into the "Poor" category. Given that there's a "Below Average" category ABOVE that, I'd say that's pretty bad. His rank is also #67 among OLB's. If you assume each team has two starters, he isn't even a starting quality OLB...

I know your response may be to challenge the validity of PFF grades, but they are no doubt a better indicator of performance than raw stats. We have better tools to evaluate performance these days dude. Don't just blindly read a stat sheet and draw a conclusion.

Additionally, I'd point to the performance of the Raiders defense and their willingness to resign him. He played along side the defensive player of the year, yet their defense was still sub-par. I know there are 9 other guys on the field, but again, it's another indicator of poor performance. If he was one of their few strong performers, they would have made an attempt to resign him as opposed to giving a similar contract to Bruce Irvin.

Also, read the article below which has some more meaningful metrics to look at such as missed tackles and touchdowns allowed in coverage - metrics that aren't reflected in the stats from the 60's that you use...

I'll rely on the guys that do this for a living. So far the new regime has been very forth coming. To wit our local beat writers are quick to be negative. Both sources have said he was having the best camp of any of our LB's. If he wasn't one of the two would have contradicted the other.

As for your arguments. PFF is not a good source. They try to add substance to stats, but are often times way off because they don't know for sure what that players responsibility is on any given play, nor what the responsibilities of those around him were. You don't rack up the 6th most tackles by an olb (100+ is a lot of tackles), while playing in a scheme that still performed poorly despite having the defensive player of the year on it, especially when that scheme doesn't mesh well with your skillset yet still be one of the worst starting 4-3 olb in the league last year. Period. You're just effing wrong dude. Get over it.

He's not a superstar, but far from the claim you made, and his loss is going to be felt

Dude, what's your problem? You are acting like it is your money. Not to mention, I bet Smith still has a positive impact this year. I can see him hanging around practice and on the sideline at games, and being a pseudo coach on the field.

All this and the fact that Lynch had the cajones to trade back into the first and grab Foster while other GM's were scared.

We're still $60m+ under the cap, man. You're so sour it's as though the team is asking you to pay the bill personally. Who shat in your cereal?

You're putting more weight on the opinions of two beat writers observing 6 non-tackling practices from the sideline over people that have reviewed the tape of every single play from the 2016 season? You also value a stat like tackles over stats that incorporate the number of missed tackles a player had or anything that involves how well they defend the pass (1 interception and a couple passes deflected are not good representations of the hundreds of pass plays he participated in).

Aggregate stats like that are completely misleading - if he had a crappy dline or was on a defense that couldn't get off the field (both true), he would have a ton of opportunities to get tackles. However, he missed a ton of those opportunities, hence his ridiculous amount of missed tackles. There is a reason the Raiders didn't want him back and why we essentially gave him a 2 year contract with very few guarantees. He's a below average player. Screaming that he had 100 tackles last year means very, very little in evaluating his performance.

fine. i will answer you if that makes you feel better.... i had a huge problem back then with the amount of money we were paying a guy who was not very good.... if you were going to do that than god lynch should have backed up the truck and over payed out mayos penis for hightower of the the pats.,, i never believe in over paying for people based upon their track record. what stuns me is that people are just ok with paying an obscene amount of money for a guy who those same people say would only be a coach.. what low expectations we have. i was thinking someone decent is out there to sign for him who can be a nice player for us but of course he goes and signs some piece of trash. but thats ok. he is not trent and gives a nice interview so its all good.. can you sleep better at night now that i answered you

Absolutely. I was trying to understand why you'd be down on the pickup. Sure, I would have loved a playmaker like Hightower too. But it might be a while before that caliber of player wants to come here.

s**t.. nfl players are like trained seals.. you throw enough money at them you can get them to play anywhere and do anything... lynch just did not try hard enough.. to get hightower. that would have showed me something but instead he got smith. over paid for him and now the whimp hurt himself making a tackle and is gone for the year.
