It's not hard to find another linebacker to throw his hands in the air confused at what the defense is supposed to be doing.

Smith needs to go, only question is June 1st cut, or take the whole hit this off season? I would just take the Whole hit, so we have more money to play with after this coming season.

It just makes me crazy when you got people who say.. i am down for resigning ward and smith if they will play for cheap because they know the system. that has NOTHING to do with the fact both are just garbage on the field when and if they see the field because they are always hurt. there is not one logical reason to keep them around. not one

Only way I would want Smith+Ward back, would be if they would sign for the league minimum. Smith would have to be cut first, and then brought back for the minimum. Both players at that price would be good for our team, but neither will sign for that with us, so it's kind of a moot point. If for some reason they would come back for that, it allows us to be more BPA in the draft compared to going by positions of need.

no.. i am sorry. no.. money has nothing to do with this. best player available also happens to fit our most important position of need in edge rusher.. at least to most of us. with lynch who knows. no, they have no relevance to our team at all. they do not matter to us as players. they do not matter to us in regards to who we draft. they are worthless clueless and due to the fact they get hurt all the time. i suspect they are dickless as well. oh by the way. just in case you say. oh this is just hating cc being hating cc.. look at their body of work for our team since they have been on the team and you will find out his statements are not baseless

Right. Sh*tty players at ANY price still don't help your team.

Thoughts on possibly going after Anthony Barr? Would he be a good fit at SAM? Replace Smith? If we were to sign him, (and in the event we were to trade back in the draft for whatever reason ) grab someone like Devin White, we'd have a pretty solid Linebacking core of Warner, White and Barr. Not sure how much it would cost to get someone like Barr, but it would be an upgrade over Smith.

The SAM LB plays about 15% of total snaps. In fact, they don't use a SAM at all versus the Rams, so if they're going to pay someone to play that position, it better be someone that can do more than just play SAM LB because handing out an exorbitant contract to play 15% of total snaps is beyond dumb.
For example, an edge rusher that can also drop back in coverage and defend the run would be a solid SAM option, or someone that can play SAM and slide over into the weakside hook spot in nickel.
I'm not losing sleep over the SAM spot, tho.

Updating this 👆🏼 from yesterday, a source says LB Malcolm Smith has restructured his contract. The Super Bowl XLVIII MVP will remain with the #49ers.

This needed to happen. I hope it doesnt stop us from going after a linebacker though
