You have to have depth guys. Not everybody is going to the Pro Bowl. It's a long season. If the contract is appropriate... why would you possibly care?

No I agree with this...have to see the numbers but I don't think he's getting starting cash anymore. Good depth is what it is.

if they do not get a linebacker. then there is no hope.. and then setting there and saying. well we could not find a linebacker better than what we already have in smith

You gotta understand, that's how people act around here. It would be great to have 22 above average starters. Most teams dont. Smith is a below avg starter at linebacker, almost every team has their version of him. Hes and above average backup though. If you can push him to a backup roll, great. If not, Irma Gerd Lynch is a mormon, lol what.

I'll complain if Malcolm ends up being the starter when the season starts. That would mean nothing was done to upgrade the WILL position. He should be playing for free after robbing the team in 2017.

Exactly. His cap hit was somewhere around 5M before and most likely around 2-3M now, that's a good deal for a solid vet backup. I'm fine with this.

Right after we figure out how much it will cost to make Marsh a Niner for the rest of his career..
Don't forget, we also need to get ahead of Jets contract extension. We signed him last year, so time is running out.
Glad I'm not Lynch and Prague. They are going to have to work some Cap magic with our loaded roster.

This could be a smart move. Keep him on a new contract and cut him in September if you have better options

Every player on the team can't be an all pro. Some can even be a former Super Bowl MVP and still kind of suck but have depth value. It's not a bad move.

At this stage of the off-season, it's about to get interesting with FA coming next week. Beyond that, they're looking for depth to fill out the roster. Smith hasn't shown well yet...but as Coach said, he's yet to be fully healthy. If a healthy Smith can help the team, I'm down with that. Guess only time will tell...but at least he's restructured his contract, so whether he ends up staying or getting traded/released, his cap value has been significantly reduced. I also believe with Lee emerging, some dandy FA's available and some outstanding players in the draft, Lynch will upgrade the LB corps and Smith could simply be veteran depth.
