The 49ers initially signed Smith to a five-year deal on March 9, 2017, worth up to $26.5 million. He was due $3.75 million in 2019 but restructured his contract, which essentially became a one-year deal, this offseason to remain with the 49ers. The remaining years on the deal voided on March 17.

Always injured unfortunately but for cap reasons a great move for 49ers IMO next I think is RB McKinnon dont think he will ever be the same

I agree
One of the worst free agent signings in the ShannyLynch era up there with McKinnon

Agree. I also agree with you on McKinnon. The signing was fantastic at the time but at this moment in time the team is deep at back. I'd feature Breida along with Coleman and they have Mostert just in case.

Hope they trade or cut Armstead. Send a real message.

its shanahan's and lynch's fault mckinnon tore his acl and hasnt progressed as fast? lots acting like mckinnon played all 16 last year and averaged 2 yds per carry with 6 fumbles, no tds with 10 drops. Smith actually looked below average whenever he finally got on the field

And then you would be crying that they gave away a third round pic. If you can't receive a third for Armstead there is no reason to cut him. He will net you a third if he leaves in free agency. Come on man this is chess not checkers. Haha

I don't know, it just seems a bit abnormal to me to see him still having problems when the prognosis was that he'd be 100% by now. Those setbacks point to maybe he's not recovering as fast as he should, or that he may not recover 100% ever.

The 3rd round pick is great IF Armstead wasn't paid as he is and IF he wouldn't take that much playing time away from some other more deserving defensive lineman BUT that's just not the case is it? You never want to wish ill- fate on anyone but if he gets hurt for an extended period of time then it's a win in this situation.

BTW in chess sometimes you have to sacrifice a piece or a position in order for the betterment of the overall game. But, you knew that right.

Good move for the team.

I had no issues with the Smith signing originally, we had to overpay yes, but he was a vet in the scheme and we were bringing him in to a losing franchise.

Injuries meant he never played but I understand the reasons we signed him.
Shame he couldn't stay on the field but this was the right move for us. We've got guys who are younger, faster, and better.
They signed wide receiver Nick Williams to a one year deal He has 30 receptions for 280 yards in FIVE YEARS. Anyone know why they would sign him this close to cut down time when they already have a log jam at receiver? If it was eary in camp I could see it or if he had been really productive but he neither is the case. I don't get it.
