He had a team option deal for a little over $5M in 2021 that had to be picked up by the end of the yr.

He had a two year team option anyways. So it was always going to be two years regardless.

Yes, they lowered his cap space by giving him a fully gtd deal. Because, ya know, cap space is easy to create

We can create cap space we all know this, you also tie yourself to a 40 yr old kicker in the process with a fully gtd contract. There's give and take. You know this.

Top 5 kickers this yr avg pay is around $750K.

I'm cool with the deal, it's not life altering cash as far as the cap goes.

he probably doesn't know about salary cap hell from the days of old

Yeah, I mean you can always move money around to create some cap space...with that comes other issues.

Prefect example is Ford/Richburg.

This scenario with Gould is good for both sides.
Just another dumb move to extend a kicker that can't kick over 50 yards. Incompetent front office
My guess is this maneuver saves the 49ers close to $3M next year.

On OTC, Gould's cap number was $5.25M for next year.

Here's my guess on how the 49ers structured this 2 year $7.25M deal...

Signing Bonus: $3M
2021 Guaranteed Base: league minimum $1.05M (+ $1.5M pro-rated signing bonus = $2.55M cap hit)
2022 Guaranteed Base: $3.20M (+ $1.5M pro-rated signing bonus = $4.7M cap hit)
Total Guarantees: $7.25M

What is unknown is how Gould's previous signing bonus will be treated. The 49ers are still on the hook for $1.5M of dead cap associated with that original $3M bonus - so $750K per year. If that number is included in the $7.25m, then great, if not, then Gould's cap numbers above would each be increased by $750K.

So in summary, this move saves the 49ers anywhere from $2-3M next year, which is HUGE.

I don't think this was the same as the Richburg/Ford situation because the 49ers could've simply voided the last two years of Gould's deal. It sounds like what they did was "effectively" void that original contract and replaced it with this new $7.25M all guarnteed deal.

In Richburg and Ford's case the 49ers didn't have that kind of escape hatch so they simply mortgaged the future. Here, it sounds like a true win-win, where Gould get's all his money guaranteed and the 49ers get cap flexibility.

That is a valid point.

You know your cap about to be tight when we hype about a kicker extension to create a lil cap space I had no idea FG kickers were even close to making 5 million a year

I hate to see a kicker make that much but Gould has been clutch since he came to SF, and with the troubles and turnover other teams have had with kickers, I'll be happy we have one of the best.

I'm saying how you can free up cap space. There's a bunch of ways you can do it. People gotta realize certain moves while gives you more space now, can hurt you a yr from now.

My example with Ford/Richburg is proof of that. They had a really nice rip cord in that Ford contract but instead restructured, which is basically taking a portion of a player's base salary and tagging onto his signing bonus. More gtd cash.

I agree Gould's situation is different...I wasn't trying to compare the situations. Sorry if it came off like that

Avg top five kickers get about $750k/year? I believe you, I just can't believe we are paying $3.6 M/year?
Damn
Almost $3M/year more for a kicker seems like a lot I think...
I know you want a reliable kicker, I just think this is high based on the top five..

AAV of $3.6m? Easy decision

Easy for both sides...fully gtd contract at his age, he will take that all day.

According to OVC, there are 13 kickers making more than Gould will be getting next year.

You can always take a chance on a guy out of college but you might wind up with Roberto Aguayo.

100%. The decision on Ford - especially in hindsight - was abysmal. The 49ers could've effectively wiped $20M off the books this offseason. Instead, best we can do now is cut Ford freeing up $6M-ish and take a $14M bath in dead cap. Absolutely BRUTAL.

But re: Gould, this is a win all around...unless his play completely falls off a cliff the next two years, but you can say that about any player...
