Disagree...I see all of Buck/AA/Thomas getting snaps at 3-tech and rotating more this season. Fresh bodies. AA is more than likely gone after this season so to say solly is done here is a bit premature imo.

I also think ST is a better pass rusher than AA

300-400 snaps tops. I do too so I hope he proves to be a better interior pass rusher and overtakes AA and consumes 90% of his snaps there.

I agree that there will be a pretty steady rotation. I think you'll see Bosa and Ford get some snaps in base as well. It definitely won't be like the Fangio days with four guys getting crazy high snaps. Between Buckner, Thomas, Armstrong, Street, Blair, Bosa and Ford there will be a lot of rotation.

No question on the rotation. We had 8 DL last year with at least 275 snaps. That shouldn't change...just the personnel.

Don't feel bad wondering what position these guys will play when our own coaching staff has no clue.

Kocurek doesn't seem like a guy confused on who to play and where.

He definitely may not be, but, again this year, it Just seems like there is no consensus amoung the coaching staff on where to play some of these guys.

But it is only the 1st day of TC.

I think it's a little early to predict snap counts for 2019. Last yr was last yr...I'm expecting the scheme to change a little week to week (more wide 9 vs OZ teams) so that in itself can dictate who's on the field more that week.

We will see. Day 2 of TC A LOT to figure out before we get to snap counts

Exactly...let's see how things play out. Considering where Thomas was last year just having him play well in the snaps he does get will be a step in the right direction. If he keeps showing good things they're going to give him more snaps. Armstead I don't see being re-signed so he's a one year guy who may be trade bait or someone we ride out and hope for a comp pick in 2021. Thomas has at least two more years plus a 5th year option.

TC just started. Let's wait and see how things shakeout.

Yeah, just looking at it logically. Bosa and Ford are here now. Thomas isn't competing for Big LEO against nobody this year. He's got 3 legit starters ahead of him at both end positions in base now. So there goes the mass majority of his 644 snaps right there.

Throw in their liking of AA inside and where we were playing him last year (some 1T/4i), that adds additional competition for ST inside in nickel. Kocurek seems to really like Day and we know Jones is an active interior DL. Buckner. Maybe Street and Taylor (another guy Saleh likes) are moved inside more now too given the quality of the three players ahead of them at end.

Now consider how ST was used inside last year. Spy on many plays in predictable passing downs.

Barring injuries, I just don't see much room for him or a clear role above anything more than role/depth player which puts him in that 300-400 snap role.

But yeah, we'll see. I'd love to be convinced otherwise but I'd have to see a pretty solid case to be more hopeful.

I very much agree about the quality of snaps and potentially, 2020. But for 2019...
In a base and snickel wide 9, the 49ers will still use a nose, but he won't play 1tech. He'll play 2tech.

Like I said we'll see how it shakes out but now it's too early either way. I like what I've heard and seen from Thomas so far in this offseason and hopefully that translates onto the football field. I think end of the day he's a better pass rusher inside than Armstead at full potential. Can he cover the ground on Armstead this year with Arik being in his 5th season vs Sully's 3rd? We'll find out.

Are either or both of the DTs in a base wide 9 ever asked to two gap?

Why do you say that outside of Day running with the 1s so far?

It was day 1 of TC with no pads on yet. Could strictly be veteran courtesy for a guy who played well last year but that can change very quickly. I think we have to keep developing our own players and give the guys we'll have under contract long term more playing time but we'll see how things change as TC rolls along.

I'm ok with Sully sitting on the bench then giving us all he's got on pass rush downs. Less for him to think about. But while I hope injuries don't play a factor in any of our snap counts...they usually do and having a guy like Thomas or Armstead to rotate definitely isn't terrible with Bosa and Ford being added on the edges. Hopefully anyone else we put outside on pass rush downs are only there to give one of thsoe guys a breather or sit them because we have a huge lead

I don't think so.

Its day 1 of TC after OTA's. This is typically the first insight into projected starting lineups as they now work on packages. That's why you saw Person move to C and Garnett to G. If the season started today...

That doesn't mean they still won't be experimenting either. But reports from OTA's were that Day was having really nice showings and very active there. With the philosophy and scheme switch, it didn't surprise me to hear Day ran with the 1's next to Buckner with Ford and AA.

Also, given the amount Day was inactive under Saleh, this also might be insight into Kocurek running the DL (like the previous DL coach). If you read up on his lineage on the wide-9, it too might give you insight into different personnel he might want.

Want to make a bet on snap counts for ST end of the yr? You're saying around 350 (avg) I'll go with the over on that

( bearing any LT injuries for him)

I wouldn't be shocked if SF went the A Smith route with Bosa yr 1 (mainly a 3rd down edge rusher). I also wouldn't be shocked if ST gets thrown out there over Ford in base (sometimes)...fords not a world beater vs the run. There's snaps to be had, more than you're indicating.
