49ers Training Camp Recap: Garoppolo, Mullens find end zone in 2-minute drills

Takeaways: Hurd's first two catches during the two-minute drill came in the middle of the field. Garoppolo helped engineer a touchdown drive during the two-minute drill that ended with him hitting his favorite camp target, WR Trent Taylor in the end zone. Taylor caught two touchdowns from Garoppolo during the drill. Injuries forced DL Solomon Thomas to play DE, where he was a handful for T Mike McGlinchey. Garoppolo was 13-of-22 in team drills.

OK, now this is interesting. Solomon suddenly excelling on the outside as well now?

If it's in the W9, the extra space may allow him to be more slippery. Just a thought...

Seems like he may be starting at DE in the pre-season game, considering none of the others are healthy enough yet (Blair, Bosa, Ford, AA). I'd rather him not get too much PT though so we don't risk losing another quality player.

Let guys like Street, Damontre Moore, Taylor, and the new guy Valoaga get the reps they need. I'm actually bummed Garcia-Williams is out with the concussion. He was a really intriguing prospect I wanted to see play. Maybe next week.

Kyle Shanahan:

"But his strength is rushing inside on third down. That's also Buckner's (strength). That's also (Arik) Armstead's. And so you've got to think of guys to put on the outside, so Solly didn't get as many opportunities that fit his number one skillset. So I do think we'll be able to use him more in the right spots, now that we've got some other guys to do that job."

A lot of people realized this on draft day.
I can't wait to watch him at Big LEO again. Good times.

Lol
Solly is the type of player that will look like a force against pre season scrubs. He's so fast in space. Problem is he can't she'd blocks against real competition and is prone to taking bad angles. I expect him to dominate this preseason and the hype to get huge for some massive improvements. I think he may be only incrementally better.

Dude, remember how good Solly looked in his first preseason game? Check out the very first play on this video. He torches the left guard with a double swipe, a highly advanced move for an interior player. I was thinking to myself, "HOLY s**t, this guy is going to be good!"

Probably because he healthy mentally and physically, and now in year 3.

Can't wait to see what he's capable of this season, I really want to see him do well.

Just kidding...back at end!

You know, I forgot Buck was at DE a bit his rookie season and didn't do bad. Hoping to see Thomas get significant work inside (25% of the game) before turning it over to the backups.

Sounds like a great backup. We we'll see what he looks like against real competition in the 3rd game and more importantly, the regular season. But I think he should be a quality starter/3rd down guy inside. Have you seen JD's film breakdowns on Thomas playing inside?
