I TOTALLY agree but this doesn't take precedence over balancing your roster. It's also never a bad thing to have a WR who can force defenses to take the extra man out of the box or that CB who gives us the option to go man on players like ODB.
It does if you view Thomas as a blue chip top 5 player which the top brass and most pundits do. If the niners had Thomas 1 or 2 on their board and were able to get him at 3 then it's a no brainer. It goes to player grades at this point by the scouting staff. If you have a premium position like DL with a top grade you take it when your picking in the top 5. besides that, I would argue DL was an area of need for us. We just witnessed the worst run defense in franchise history.
IMO, this is a homerun pick and getting the extras from Chicago makes it almost like stealing. We now have 11 picks to continue rounding out the roster. I'd give this first move by Lynch and Co an A.

That could be pretty damn sick.
prolly for base. on passing downs, slide AA inside to replace Mitchel, and bring in Lynch.
I like it. Our rebuild will take 2-3 years man. And honestly from what people are saying about next years draft class this is better off being a hard learned losing season lol

Not my draft favorite but the bottom line I was hoping for out of this draft was at least one blue chip player and Thomas is very likely going to be one.

Absolutely amazed we got some fans crying over taking one of the 3 best players in the draft....Garrett, Solomon, Allen,. But allen has been playing injured, (he's still great), Garrett went #1, and we got the best DL in the draft....also one of the best two players in draft. What is wrong with that?
"Build your lines first"....Vince Lombardi. Well, Lynch and Kyle pretty well fixed the OL and O with Zuttah and then Jusczyk. Gilliam as a good backup. Sure we need a QB, WR, but we gotta build our D and the DL is the place to start As for where Solomon plays? Well ,that is why i said Saleh has the toughest job on the team. Get the talent and then put out a D that utilizes all our guys. Don't get so buried in 3t, 1t, 5 t....just let Saleh figure out who goes where best....and almost surely, WHEN and more to the point, WHERE. What we got was something we are running low on....an all pro/IMPACT players, who we need as a leader. Could we have made a better choice? Jamal adams...at #2? Way too high for a S. Williams as WR? Yep but at #2, ok, #3, too high. Garrett? Gone to Cleve. So we got :
Potential all pro.(Likely)
Definite IMPACT player
Team Leader (all character guy with huge work ethic....oh yeah, helluva athlete). Oh, and we are about out of gas with our two IMPACT leaders...Bow and Joe. We had to have Solomon.
DL member....cripes we couldn't stop anybody's run game all yr. Hell yeah we needed an IMPACT, all pro DL.
John gets the talent, Saleh figures out how to use it. That means finding a place for AA and as PHX said, that might mean moving all over. Fantastic, can't wait to see it.
And, and....we picked the Bears pocket for a rd 3, rd 4 and then rd 3 next yr....we were going to take him anyway...Lynch just sweetened the pick. I love it.
So Kyle and John worked on OL in FA, and now gave a huge lift to DL. How on earth can anyone not like that, esp with 3 pieces of candy besides, thank you Lynch and CHI.

Again, our DL is more than good enough to get the job done. The objective is not to have the best line ever but to the detriment of having the worst secondary or the worst receiving core. I mean why not compound our backs for depth? Our Corners? Our wide outs? DL was one of our stronger points last year. That pick was immature at best.

Dude i could have ran on the 49ers defense last year. They were horrible man. This kid is NOT a bad pick, maybe not sexy, but its a good pick.

Kinda sucks to still see Jed and paarag involved in football decisions
Maybe we need to open to the possibility that he might not be as much of a detriment as we thought and that with the new regime his skills will be used optimally and his issue will be controlled.

Wow 😂😂😂😂 he could have selected Barbra Bush and some of you guys would have justified it with ideas on paper, enthusiastic hypothetics and ones sided views all while ignoring the fact that the DL was fine with or without Thomas. But our secondary is not fine with a situation where our best corner is a 4th corner at best.

The run defense was atrocious so I disagree completely with the bold. We need upgrades to the run stopping and pass rush - so if that's the case how is our D line more than good enough.
Running Backs can be had later in the draft under a Shanahan system. He's proven in - plus it's a deep RB draft. Same with safety if we want to strengthen that later in the draft.

respectfully disagree with you. the backfield simply cannot operate without a DL that pressures the pass/run game.
i will agree with you that an explosive offensive skill player is long overdue for the team.

Happy with the pick. Top talent as well as first class character.
Kinda hoping we jump back in towards the end of the first to nab a qb or perhaps one of the Bama players if they keep falling.

That's right because Mitchell was there, Smith was here and Bowman was there. Cmon man you are being disingenuous

I don't agree with you about the secondary at all. With Ward playing free safety, Robinson growing and some other serviceable corners with upside, and probably a rookie to develop, I don't think we are going to lose games because our secondary is awful.
Shannahan appears to be able to maximize WR and QB talent in a way that gives a direct competitive advantage to the 49ers, allowing them to put more money into defense and OL

D-line was fine last year? We gave up more rushing yards than any 49ers team ever. How is that fine? We're also switching to a 4-3. Gonna need more D-lineman. There isn't a single analyst that has said anything bad about us picking Solomon. Not sure your opinion is greater than every single person out there that's paid to do the job, puck. lol
