I'm wondering if Solomon gaining weight would limit his initial explosion? Hard to play NT at 280lbs on a consistent basis. I remember Tim Ryan saying once he gained 15lbs in college to hold the point better, and after a few practices, he lost the weight because he didn't move as well.

49ers abandoned their under front as their base alignment in the offseason.
wide 9 over is their base alignment, and Defo plays 3t on the strong side.
BTW, just for clarity, Solly is down to 270 lbs. He said he felt sluggish at 280.
Solomon Thomas just told me that he tried to drop weight last season after opening at a career-high 280 pounds. Thomas says that he feels best playing at 270 pounds so that he can bring unusual quickness against guards in the 3-tech position.

This thread has gone insane. It's like Trump where you say so many crazy things that you can get away with it because there is too much to dissect.
But so glad Thomas is an all world run stopper, strongest player ever, as good as AA and Buckner as a pass rusher if he got the chance, and clearly never gets beat one on one or by double team's. Clearly we should cut bait with Buckner and sign Thomas to a long term deal.

You already proved my point better than I ever could with your own video.

At least Bosa is exceeding my already high expectations but Thomas breaking out now would've been really helpful. I still have a glimmer of hope that maybe one more offseason getting his chit together could get it done next year but that glimmer is dim as hell right now and it's a shame cuz I'm really rooting for the kid with everything that's happened to him.

ST has consistently underperformed since being drafted, so that should tell people he really just isn't a starting caliber DL in the NFL. It sucks because most fans want him to succeed, but no amount of discussions on physics or isolating a play here and there will convince anyone he's actually anything more than a backup DL.
Would love to be wrong, but all evidence points to him just being average. Some players have nearly all the tools just miss one critical component, that may be the case here.

Ultimately without wiffing on Thomas I doubt we get Bosa. If we would have drafted literally anyone else I don't think we would be doing as well as we are now. Missing on one pick is not the end of the world, even a high pick as Thomas was.
If you just watch a players hands and feet you can tell a lot about a player. Thomas looked great in college because he was more athletic and strong against pac 12 lineman, now everyone is strong and he didn't learn the skills or technique to get off his blocks or rush the passer.
On the other hand Bosa had amazing hands and feet yet his numbers weren't as good as say "josh allen" cause he wasn't able to win as often using just his athleticism.
Paying attention to to the little things is how we prevent making another mistake like this.
And yet I still hope Thomas balls out during these playoffs somehow. Cause rn he might be one if the most important players to the success of our defense considering the injuries we have had.
