I could see a restructured deal that would drop him back into the $5-6M range and a two-year extension to spread the cap hit. He is turning out to be a good rotational player, so keep him. Let's see how he does in the playoffs.
I'd be surprised if he restructures his deal. Especially if it's all guaranteed. He will never sniff $9M again. Not much incentive to give up immediate guaranteed money. Money paid now goes to work for you faster than money paid later.
His 2020 guarantee is $4,300,000. His cap number is $8.9M, includes roster bonus and other incentives. They could extend him without him losing money. In the end, if he stays, and plays the way he has in the past couple of games, he will be worth it.
Sure you could extend, but if you have pretty large contracts for Bosa (rookie deal but #2 pick money), Buckner, Armstead, DJ Jones (contract year), Ford, and a potential 3rd edge guy...why extend Solomon Thomas if you can replicate his production and impact with a cheaper player (e.g. Street fingers crossed).
