Sucks I hope he breaks out because he's seems like a fantastic person.

I felt he improved last year in his limited play, but what I would describe it is he would always get close, but never finish if that makes sense. He was disruptive at times, but could never finish it off etc.

People HATED AA and had almost zero hope and then last year happened.

Maybe Thomas does the same thing and we have a great problem.

Hoping the same for Thomas. I've been re-watching some games from last year...I agree, he had some good moments. He did seem to improve somewhat and made some plays in a limited amount of snaps. You just have to hope for continued improvement, continued impact - especially considering he was a #3 overall pick. Imagine if he plays better this year and becomes more consistently disruptive...the DL rotation will just be that much better!

100%. If he actually does improve and contribute the online would be that much better and it would help ease Kinlaw in. I understand he may never live up to the expectations of a #3 pick but who cares if he can be "good".

I think Lynch nailed it when he was talking about how Thomas needs to gain some strength. We tried too much making him an edge base to DT passing down player. For someone who's already a tweener, when you are a jack of all trades, you are a master of none.

Get him plump, and then play him as a 3 tech or even nose tackle on base and passing downs. He'll fare much better.

Bottom line, half of the top 10 picks that year including Solly are not getting their 5th year option picked up. That's the NFL draft in a nutshell. Teams and GM's are lucky if they hit on half their picks. Niners were no different.

As fans, all we can hope for is that Solly follows the same career track as Laken Tomlinson. His 5th year guarantee wasn't picked up, but he had a good 4th year which led to keeping his starting job and getting a long term deal. It's not over yet.

Once we took Kinlaw that became pretty unlikely. He has to do what he can as a rotational player.

That will make it more difficult for him, but you never know. Rooting for him, but not going to be too sad if the Niners move on from him after this year. It's a business and the Niners are definitely on a quest for number six.

It's incredible that 5 of the top ten players didn't get their options picked up.

Agree, and makes Kittle's performance as a 5th round pick all the more impressive. I would like to think that the shortened year and the newbie-ness of the coaches and scouts working with each other played a factor in the 2017 draft shortcomings.
Cmon solly. Still rooting for this dude. He's a good person but I'm afraid he's not physically talented enough to hang in the trenches

Yeah, it's a shame - he's got the size, he just doesn't have the game.

I'm inclined to believe this.

He probably has a very small window to wow. I'm guessing the first couple of weeks he'll get some run stopping downs, but shortly thereafter Kinlaw will take over full time.

Its now or never, Solly. Better call Pete Carol and ask him for those special vitamins.

What's not considered here is the coaching attrition seen with those picks. 50% failure rate? 50% coaching turnover today vs. 2017, which means scheme changes, coaching changes, development changes, etc.

How do you plan for human error?

Attitude changes, lack of Motivation, negative response to new found millionaire status, soft (like Borland), or undiagnosed mental health issues, addiction, or negative influence of a future female companion post draft? to name a few.

If these guys were robots I could understand your frustration, but when you are dealing in human beings... Stuff gets extremely complicated
