They will have paid ST ~$28 million total, but this year he "only" costs $4.3 million = they would save $4.3 mil by cutting him

And again, there isn't anyone that can convince me that paying $4.6+ mil for Thomas to go away is better than paying him $9M to play for us.
As far as the saving 4.3 million if we trade him, it all depends on what we can get back (not much), whether he is going to get lots of reps with Kinlaw+Hyder brought in to replace Buckners reps, also DJ Jones is gonna get more reps, along with Ford (if healthy). If Thomas is down on our depth chart, saving 4.3 million might make a lot of sense if we can get a like a 5th round pick for him.

Trading him saves us 4.3 million that we can use to extend Kittle or T. Williams right now, while also easing our d-line rotation. If Thomas isn't viewed as something special by Kocurek, then I would easily be down for trading Thoams away if someone will take his 4+ million salary for 2020, and give us a respectable draft pick.
I blame our Dline coach for his inability to shine.

Hopefully he doesn't have any more setbacks. Physically, he reminds me of Ray McDonald. A little under sized but quick. Just needs to get his head clear of all the distractions. He did start to play a little better toward the end of last year.

ray mcdonald seemed bigger than thomas to me. ray was a beast DT too. underrated.

Does it though? Getting back the $4.3M of cap relief is more than enough to make the trade. I dont think a valuable pick is necessary.
You got me there, the 4.3 million of cap relief by trading Solomon is almost worth it alone, regardless of draft compensation. Maybe we need to trade him to a team for a conditional draft pick, all dependent on what % of snaps he takes this coming season. Worst case we get a 2020 7th, and best case we get a 2020 5th. Seems like a low risk for a team to take a flier on him. For us, we can use the 4.3 million else where like helping extend either Kittle or T. Williams. Solomon to me with the Kinlaw addition, basically is deemed expendable. I would rather see DJ Jones getting more reps in the middle, than getting the under sized Solomon inside. Then when it comes to edge, I would rather have Armstead or Hyder in there, if Ford+Bosa aren't in.
Ha..why is everyone on this dudes nuts? He's mediocre. Get.over.it. Do something productive with your lives.
Hes a god amongst men.
I heard that he's better than our guy nick Bosa

I hate to be that a*****e but people act like hes been dealing with his sisters unfortunate suicide his entire career. When will people accept that he just might not be that good? Do people forget he was just as bad his rookie season without having to deal with those issues? And yes I get it, he was rookie. Yes I know, you can bring up DeFo and Armsteads numbers. But those guys flashed and showed potential. Thomas has been extremely underwhelming his entire career.

He has!! its his Sister. THEY GREW UP TOGETHER !!! He has not performed Like a Top 5 First Rounder Pick and that is True. Honestly when People ask Me @ Draft Party's.. Should they they take this guy or the OTHER, I Always respond its a "50..50 proposition"

He is mediocre - he realistically is a career backup.

No he hasn't. Not sure what the exclamation points are for on such an incorrect statement. His sister passed at the end of his rookie season.

I think end of the day people(and I know it included me) thought he could be a Michael Bennett type of player who is able to play well vs the run and pass at big end and move down inside on pass downs. He just never showed that ability on the outside.

He flashed on the inside but certainly not what you want from a top 3 pick. Whether his sister's suicide completely derailed his NFL career we'll never know obviously it's not something that can be changed and we can't go back and know what he would look like had that not happened his 2nd season.

I think Thomas can still play well inside but what made him so good was his athletic ability vs guards/centers. On the outside he's not big enough or fast enough to have much impact vs the OTs who are used to playing vs much better edge rushers but I do think his development inside was hurt by his snaps on the outside.

But like I said...at this point it is what it is...We took Kinlaw so that took any chance of him starting out the window. He needs to get his body and mind right and make sure the snaps he does see next year(hopefully inside only) that he make them count.

I'm not gonna hold out hope though. Shame cuz he's a great guy but he's been a major disappointment.

Agree that he's been one major disappointment, for whatever reason. Drafting Kinlaw really made him expendable. Assuming he doesn't play much this season because of DJ Jones, Kinlaw, and Julian Tayor -- I can see them trading Thomas for what they can get before this years Halloween trade deadline.
