"It's been our intent to try to keep him inside as much as possible, but he's such a talented football player that sometimes it's, 'Well, shoot, we've got to get him on the field,'" 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh said after an August 23 practice, per 49ers.com. "But, with what we have now with being able to bring Kerry Hyder Jr., we have Ronnie [DE Ronald Blair] coming back from PUP, you've got Dee Ford, you've got [Nick] Bosa, you have Arik [Armstead] who can play outside, too. We're doing everything we can to make sure that Solly stays inside at all costs."

Finally.
Based on what has transpired in camp this year, it leads me to believe that the Niners really didn't put Thomas in the best position to win throughout his NFL career. Personally, I would be really upset if I was him
If the team thought ST would succeed inside, they wouldn't have spent their first round pick on Kinlaw. IMO that move revealed more than anything else about how ST doesn't fit in their plans.

For the first two seasons (for many reasons) he struggled, and last year - I think did a lot better than the previous two years, but not enough to earn a 5th year option. That has forced him to play and play well if he wants a job next year somewhere (if not here with the 49ers). I think last year, with Kocureck, he's really developed and 49ers are a wait and see if he is worthy of a 2nd contract offer. I think Thomas is more mad at himself for letting things get to him more than the 49ers moving him around.
Good on him. Now real games start. Attack that gap kid!

I'll remain skeptical unless I see it during the season.

Aric Armstead v.2. What a welcome turn events if Solly steps up to fill Buckner's shoes until Kinlaw is ready.

This would be quite nice, especially if Kinlaw needs time to develop

Not sure about it. Lynch said he was looking for more size at DTackle when he talked about replacing Buckner.

In fairness, coaches never really pumped him up like this in previous offseasons. So maybe he has turned a corner?

Both he and Pettis are getting substantially better press than any point of their careers. It may all be a ruse, but Shanahan's been pretty straightforward in the past. But he did say that he was going to be deliberately vague and misleading because of COVID, so who knows.

Would be bittersweet for me to be honest because DJ Jones and yes even Solly was reasons I gave prior to the draft for us not needing Kinlaw to begin with

19 games is a long season. we'll need all the depth we can have to make a good run for #6. Even if its only for one more year.
