So they needed to redraft the position they used their two previous first round picks on or he will play with and compliment the past two first round picks?
DE in a 3-4 and DE in a 4-3 are two different positions. Buckner and Armstead came in as 3-4 DE's. Thomas comes in as a 4-3 DE and a DT in nickel, different players.
Thomas played in a 3-4 at Stanford, tasked with disrupting opposing offenses from the interior against guards, much like Armstead and Buckner during their college careers at Oregon. Thomas is redundant

He played nose tackle, 3 technique, 5 technique....etc. He's versatile and explosive. Can line him up all over based on matchup advantages.
