That is all
Or.... I know this sounds crazy... but maybe he just needed to play his natural position.
Don't be ridiculous. He should be able to play anywhere, who cares why he got drafted.

Exactly. Considering our concerns at guard, Thomas should be able to slide right in. Number 3 pick and all.

Nice take.

49ers DL Solomon Thomas among NFL players under the most pressure according to NFL.Com
There are plenty of big names on the list, but Thomas being a high draft pick earns him a spot

NFL.com's Adam Schein came up with a list of nine players around the NFL that are under the most pressure for the 2019 season. The list was headlined by new Oakland Raiders wide receiver Antonio Brown, but there were plenty other notable names on the list as well. From Le' Veon Bell to Kirk Cousins. Schein insists it's time for the veterans to put up this year.
Schein snuck in a name at number nine that might be an afterthought to most fans around the league. He isn't for fans of the San Francisco 49ers, in any case. Here's what was said about Solomon Thomas:
The first pick John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan ever made -- in the third overall slot of the 2017 NFL Draft-- has been totally invisible. Thomas, who famously first bonded with Lynch when they took a class together at Stanford in the summer of 2014, seemed like a safe pick with plenty of upside. Two years into his NFL career, the defensive end has four sacks.
2019 is go time for the Niners as a team. I think they are going to surprise a lot of people and win a ton of games. On offense, Shanahan has Jimmy Garoppolo back under center and a cadre of new toys to play with (free-agent signee Tevin Coleman, as well as versatile draft picks Deebo Samuel and Jalen Hurd). On defense, Lynch seriously beNo. 2 overall pick Nick Bosa. Imagine if Thomas lives up to the hype. Or even resembles a legit starting NFL player.
It's is nothing new on this site. We've talked ad nauseam about how Thomas needs to put together a season that makes the 49ers forget about his first two. Thomas was reportedly on the trading block during the weekend of the NFL Draft.
The pressure is higher than it should be because of where Thomas was draft. That's not his fault. He also acknowledged some personal issues that if you've never been through it, it'd be impossible to understand what Thomas is going through. The move inside seemed to help Thomas. We'll see how he plays inside with a full offseason to practice and hone his skills as an inside pass-rusher.

This is still a huge assumption. Remember, Saleh is our DC. It was his choice all along to keep ST at LEO for run defense and give him minimal snaps inside and only for obvious passing downs.
I mean, we hope he's exclusively inside every down now but...Saleh-happens...so we'll see.

Bust or not, can we stop calling him a Defensive End? He is clearly a DT that has been playing (poorly) out of position for some reason. Hopefully that will change with the additions of Ford/Bosa and he can at least be a solid run defender instead of a ghost on the edge.

Based on our roster, the talent added, Saleh as the DC as NC pointed out, and Kyle Shanahan's own words, I think Thomas will still be playing on the edge lol. Either he or AA will be starting at the big end position and then he goes inside on passing downs. Sounds kind of the same, but not completely. I do think we will get a little more production out of him. Also, if they start wise, then Nick Bosa plays the RDE position while Thomas plays left. Having the pressure come from the right side would do wonders. There may be some cleanup sacks, TFLs, and QB hits/pressures to be had for Thomas there. On passing downs, if he is inside, surrounded by Buckner, Bosa, and Ford, even if Thomas is the one taking the double team, he should do fairly well in that position. Will we get number 3 overall production? Hopefully. What will be interesting to see is who gets the lion's share of the snaps inside and outside between AA and Thomas. Also, how does Street's progress compare to the two first rounders.

Jeez, just give the guy a chance to play where he excels, not where Kyle or saleh need him. The experiment to date is an epic fail, and i wonder if zgonnia was responsible for this? If so, Kocurek please take note and play the guy where he plays best. We got Dee and we got Bosa. Put Solomon between Dee adn Buck and let 'Er rip. This business of either the HC or DC playing guys out of position has proven itself a FAIL.
What really was maddening was when kyle told saleh to put Solly inside and sumbicth if zgonnia doesn't line him up inside and then shift him to outside pre-snap. . Man that was poor. I just half wonder exactly just how much damage zagonia did to us. For sure i am glad he is zzzgone. No question he countermanded kyle's Order at least once. Was he also responsible for Tarvarius moving to CB from S? Or was that our DB coach.? Glad he is gone too.
I hope kyle or john come out before season starts and tells us, "we won't be switching anymore guys who belong at "X" to stay at "x" position. No more putting guys where they fail, instead of where the belong...and succeed.
Originally posted by LifelongNiner:I'm all for this. I'm just going off of what came out of Kyle's mouth. I do believe they will play inside A LOT more, but on base (which won't be often), I can see Thomas still out there at big end. I don't like it, but at least the other starting end will likely be Bosa, so we will have a line that can hold up against the run (Bosa-Buckner-Jones-Thomas/AA/Street) and we have to legit pass rushers on it.
