LOL... before the game started they said he would go high if he declared. Nobody thought he would come out. That's why he wasn't in mocks that apparently make you think that he was a 1 game wonder. He had a very good season. He tore it up. We've used him out of place and he's gone through a personal issue.

Sure, he can be a bust, but scouts were on him before the bowl game.

I know, I said preseason. He was around a mid to late first half way through the season . I haven't seen any mocks with him a early pick during the preseason.

mocks mean nothing is my point. It wasn't until the end of the season that people were wondering if he'd declare coming off such a good year.
Regardless, I think my point is that he wasn't necessarily overrated and that the buzz after the bowl game was only news to those that didn't follow Stanford and the general media because scouts thought he'd stay in school so he was left off everyone's mocks.

He played really well, has great measurables, and wasn't a jaw dropping pick. He did have some tape where he seemed to take his foot off the pedal but so much of him hustling extra hard. So far he's been mostly played out of position in a system that doesn't fit him. I hope he gets a fair amount of snaps inside in this wide 9 system during pass rush downs.

I think we're both excusing him up til now and hoping he makes the jump

Yeah if they play him in his natural position and does not bring anything, then it'll confirm it was a bad pick.

I mean its not really his fault he was over rated. He shot up the draft charts by having a great bowl game and testing well in the combine, then a fellow alumnus happen to be a new GM with the 3rd pick. I don't think you can find one preseason mock with him anywhere near the top 20.

I found multiple mock drafts with him in the top 5 using a google search. It wasn't a reach, he just hasn't panned out yet.

Looks like he's working hard, that's the main thing.

I don't think putting the work in was ever a problem for him. It just hasn't translated to the field

Maybe they drafted him thinking he could transition himself into being this 10 sack defensive end because he tested well. Well he probably can't, but that doesn't mean he can't be like a Justin Smith for us. I mean he's not untalented.

That's exactly what happened. I'm guilty of this myself. I saw a Michael Bennett type player in him. Better college play, better athletic talent. Bennett didn't exactly hit the ground running with Tampa Bay either and turned into a vastly better player with Seattle. But i did think with that athletic ability, work ethic that Sully could develop on the outside but move inside on obvious passing downs to really utilize his strengths.

That didn't happen. His sister's suicide made things even harder to evaluate. We certainly had plenty of people in here claim that he should just suck it up and deal but when you're so depressed that you're just going through the motions AND you're not even getting playing time where you're most comfortable well the results in hindsight aren't shocking.

That's not abnormal though.

There have been plenty of players who sky rocketed up draft boards in one year and tumbled in the same year.

For every Nick Bosa there is a Deionte Thompson who was projected as a top 10 pick going into the season. Goes in the 5th round.

You have your Carson Wentz who was talked about as a possible smart choice in the 2nd round after the season. Fast forward a couple of months and a team is giving up a bounty so they could draft him at #2 overall.
Where was Mitch Trubisky?

How many preseason mocks had Quinnen Williams top 5 before this season? Yet after the season most considered him to be the best player in the draft.

Here's one...he's nowhere to be found(kind of nice seeing Deebo listed as a first rounder though)

Teams LOVE themselves some potential and Sully was oozing with it. Huge jump from his first starting season in terms of production and impact. Great athletic testing and no off the field issues. That's exactly the type of player who climbs up draft boards.

We keep getting screwed by the hidden "injury probability" category for Madden stats.

Carson Wentz was mocked as a 2nd rounder as late as January before the draft. Mock drafts are ultimately are good for entertainment and little else, especially months our before the draft.

He went exactly where he was expected to go. You can never fault a player for being overrated. They don't rate themselves. (They would ALL overrate themselves though)
At first I didn't read that you said pre-season, but a jump up the draft board is totally normal from pre-season to the draft. Pre-season mocks are pretty useless because they come before a whole year of game film. I'm more shocked when a preseason mock gets it right.

You've never seen the Tom Brady no high five gif lol? It's a thing enough that it's in the new Madden.

I'm ashamed. Maybe I saw it but didn't pay attention. Either way, my life is better for having noticed that.
