I'm with this. The idea is we'll actually run wide 9 on many early base downs. What a concept in a passing league, eh? Gap destroyers inside. Solomon inside would be perfect for this IMHO.

If Saleh is running out his stupid predictable SNICKEL packages, f**k him and his shiny bald head.

Not enough size for a 60% running set. Of bosa and Ford are there, that's a wide 9 and you need some serious beef in the middle to protect LB's

Or disruptive 3T who can blow up plays in the backfield while the LB's fill.

Right now, D.J. Jones is the only 1T we have and he's probably under 300 pounds.

This is a viable solution IMHO.

As jd posted above, the interior DL really needs to protect the inside* in a base wide 9. I don't think Solly would hold up very long in that scenario and our smallish LBs would be getting wrecked.

I do. I think he'd crush it. Just like in college. He'd destroy the backfield and G's and C's and in the JD film, in the rare opportunities he was allowed inside and the opposition did run, he was very effective in either holding the point or blowing up the running play in the backfield. Now that he's even bigger and stronger, even more so.

Basically, I'd need some actual visual evidence of him getting pancaked on the regular inside before I say, yeah, OK, run D.J. Jones back out there. LOL
Solly actually dropped weight lol. He said he's around 270 lbs.

I guess it all depends on expectations. Certainly he won't be an every down player on the end with Bosa and Ford (baring injuries). I'm glad he'll get a shot in the middle on 3rds, but I was hoping for more based on his draft spot.

It's not a shot on 3rds, it's a shot in sub package defense ie nickel and dime. Teams are in sub packages at least 60% of their defensive snaps, and against teams like the Rams and Cards, we may line up in those sub packages 80%+.

There will be loads of opportunities for him to make an impact if he can win his way into the rotation.

Actually, thanks for the clarification. I clearly was over simplifying it in my head. What you're saying makes a ton of sense. It's not like the 49ers will be lining up against Jim Tomsula and Mike Singletary type teams every week ( 3 yards and a cloud of dust)

Did Donald? He's as big as Donald if not bigger.

Donald is 280 and like 3 inches shorter. Very different frames. Solly is built like an edge player. In fact, his frame is pretty similar to Bosas.

It was brought up in today's presser, but here it is as well:

Thanks! Interesting he referenced the 3T. Backup to Buckner? Two 3T's in the wide 9? Dude is just a tweener and Saleh loves AA. So nickel may be it for him?

Don't feel bad wondering what position these guys will play when our own coaching staff has no clue.
He's gonna be a back up fellas. AA gonna slide inside next to Buckner in nickel. He'll get a snaps in relief

No he won't. Thomas will play inside in Nickel. We'll see if Armstead can hold the big end spot in base and whether he's even on the roster week 1(very likely a trade candidate along with Blair mostly due to contract length)

270 pound nose tackles aren't a thing and for good reason. Thomas is a DE in base and an interior rusher on passing downs.
By almost every reporter's account Solly was balling out in the first TC practice. Not earth shattering because no pads, but he almost seems way ahead of what he was last year.
