Ahkello Witherspoon, CB

I'm sure the coaches are doing a full week of psychoanalysis on Spoon to see if he can handle a start Saturday. Good thing we have EMan to lean on.

That's because he's taught to not look for the ball when he's OUT OF PHASE. And Ahkello is OUT OF PHASE a lot because he always gives guys free releases. OUT OF PHASE=he's beat.

Despite thl, jd, myself and countless others posting about this ad nauseaum, this forum still doesn't understand basic cornerback technique. Every NFL coach from Bill Belichick and Vic Fangio to Pete Carroll teach this technique.

The solution? Don't be out of phase. Be in phase. Don't lose early at the line of scrimmage. Don't give guys free releases. Use your 6-3, 200 frame to obstruct the wide receiver's release, stem and use the boundary to squeeze them and take away their space. Football 101

I thought DK Metcalf had a much better day yesterday against the Eagles D than the week before against Witherspoon.

I'm a big fan of CBs who stay in phase.

Okay can you please enlighten us on the difference between an out-of-phase situation where a Defender is trailing a downfield receiver and an in Phase situation where a Defender is trailing a downfield receiver? They seem identical to me but one turns around and breaks up the pass and the other has it go over his head for a completion without seeing anything. What's the difference in the two cases?

In phase means the DB is not trailing. In phase means the DB is shoulder to shoulder or stacked on the WR. An in-phase DB controls the leverage and vertical axis of the WR's route. That's what affords him the luxury of being able to look for the ball.

Nick Saban has been teaching this technique for decades:

They don't understand whether or not somebody actually busted for and he may have been making up for somebody and shouldn't have been there in the first place. Ahkello actually, when you go back and look at that tape, played a pretty good football game. There were a couple of situations where he got caught in a bad situation.

So two plays weren't Spoon's fault. Anybody have a guess on which two plays and what went wrong?
Come on 'spoon, turn up on Saturday! We need your f**kin A game!

Eric Crocker had a thread about the Seahawks game.

Hope that link works. Basically Spoon's initial coverage was quite good, but Wilson had all day to throw, 7 seconds at some points. His ability to extend the play has always been our downfall. Hopefully with Ford back for pass rushing downs, things should improve.

^That hits on what NC and I were talking about last week. That both Moseley and Spoon were getting beat, and in a similar fashion. As I said twice during the game thread "Moseley in, same result".

I believe in Witherspoon.

Remind me, how many TDs did Mosely give up?

Lol Jesus. So you're like Akhellos version of tradethomastoNE. That's coach speak. This entire season coaches have been sticking up for the players. They're not going to just call him out to the media.

The rest of his quote is:
"But, to say he played a poor game against Seattle, I'll be honest with all of you, it would be inaccurate."

Lol, so saying he played poor is inaccurate but somehow he got benched during the most important time... Right. Saleh is clearly just trying not to kill Witherspoons confidence.
this guy got a bit of an ego? or is just me? lol

However, Witherspoon said he was told at the start of this week that he wouldn't lose his first-string status. He acknowledged he wasn't thrilled by his performance against the Seahawks, which included allowing 14-yard touchdown receptions to wide receivers Tyler Lockett and D.K. Metcalf.

"I think I played average," Witherspoon said. "And I'm not an average player. So that's a poor game for me. Just little things that just don't need to happen."

"There are just plays that I have to make if I'm going to be the player that I want to be," Witherspoon said. "It's not about (playing) good or bad. It's just the potential I have in my body and what I've done already with my body, with my gifted abilities"
