I'm fine with the pick, and will trust Shanny on this one. CJ can start as 3rd string, and work his way up. I highly doubt that they will try to sneak him onto the PS, why risk losing our 3rd round pick for nothing? I loved our first 3 picks, and I love the fact that we've added an extra 2nd and 3rd rounder for next year. CJ was a curious pick, but we don't have to worry about him needing to play right away.

As you said, Shanahan probably sees him as a long-term backup solution. There is obviously value in a backup QB -- look at how the Raiders collapsed after Carr went down. On top of this, some of the money backup QBs are getting is insane; for example, look at the Eagles signing Chase Daniel to a 3-year, $21M extension ($12M guaranteed). Now that's probably an extreme example, but still.
This. If they do this kind of "reach" for a 4th string tackle maybe get upset. But a position who makes your whole offense work, and todays NFL, when a player is 1 hit away from being pulled off the field against their will.

Nope. Anytime he does something good, this is the gif that puts things back in perspective.

This pick makes total sense. It fits with everything they were doing in FA - bring in players that fit in the system. Some here complained they didn't sign this guy or that guy but "those guys" didn't fit the system. Shanahan knows it takes a while to put it all together and he wants the team to at least be able to execute the concepts even if they don't always win. In the long run, that is the way you build a team.
The worst thing you can do is bring in guys that may be good athletes but don't fit the system. Round pegs don't fit in square holes. We just saw that over the past few years. Shanahan saw it as well and #7 is no longer here.
If we look back at the description of what KS wants in a QB, we see Beatherd. He wants a guy that stands tall in the pocket, processes quickly, a natural thrower, accurate, a good athlete who can move when he must and loves football.
It seems clear the move up to get him was based on how Shanahan viewed him rather than how the rest of the talking heads viewed him. Shanahan liked him a lot based on 2015. In his mind, he knew there was quality there and wanted the kid. He had no way of knowing whether other teams saw him that way or not but he feared others would like him as much as he did and jump in ahead of the 49ers.
In short, Kyle Shanahan got his man.

Does Kyles history of picking QBs involve anyone beyond Cousins?
This reminds me of Baalke outsmarting people with Aldon and wanting to do it again with AJJ. Kyle seems to have done the same here, there's a couple other QBs I would've gone with at that spot.
Not a huge deal since I wasn't really confident in those guys developing either, but it's the first pick I don't agree with. Still happy with the draft so far.

Unfortunately, it's going to be the new Kap throwaway pass/Alex's slipped ball/etc.
I've seen Jeff Garcia run into his linemen like that.

There was a kind of in depth scouting report on him that was posted earlier in the thread that was sort of interesting breaking down what the evaluator thought his strengths and weaknesses were. Intelligence and toughness were the two that stood out to me, the ability to understand and execute the offense the way it is designed and the willingness to stand in and make the throw, sometimes to his detriment in terms of the hits he took. Hard to tell from the highlight reel what he might look like during the course of whole game but the thing that I saw was that he knew what the play was and where he was going to go with ball and got it out of his hands. A lot of the highlight reels of the other QBs in this draft showed them running around and making something out of a broken play. Been there done that. Give me a guy who gives the play the best chance of succeeding at the snap rather than the guy who has to keep pulling plays out of his hat. Have no idea whether this is a good or bad pick but am certainly willing to give him the benefit of the doubt at this point. Go Niners!
Agreed. I watched several videos, stayed poised and got rid of ball quickly enough while under pressure during most of the throws. Saw him scramble a few times, even get a leaping TD one time, not afraid to run.
Look at our starting QB Hoyer (for now), he went undrafted about 7-8 years ago. And many posts here criticize the QB that Shanny and Lynch preferred while only giving up a 7th rd pick to move up a few spots. Sure scouting reports have him at rounds 5-7 and I can see why many were upset thinking he'd still be there in the later rounds. But out of their nearly 200 list of players our HC/GM compiled, Beathard must have been the best talent and value in their eyes.
Baalke's reign of terror drafting high round busts and ACL injured rookies is over. Shanny, Lynch, and crew have done an amazing job acquiring additional draft picks this year and next while trying to rebuild a 2-win team. And I'm going to support them whether they draft my favorite rookie or not.
Well done fellas...back to back great posts and takes.
Thanks, NC! It's much appreciated, especially from a well-respected zoner like you.

Whether you like the pick or not it is nice to see the team continue to make picks that are consistent with a clear overarching plan.

Completely blew the value concept in the draft.
If they didnt get ants in their pants, they could have had bethards and chad hansen, or another future-starter type.
Face it--it was a total reach; total poor decision; lame job.

I didnt know who he was but goddam...His arm is VERY good. His dropback is better then Kizer and ANY qb that went in round 1 especially under center.
Goes through reads, while having Eli/Brees pocket awareness
Playaction is convicing, excutes to perfection
From what Ive seen his accuracy is up to par
They say his football IQ is amazing
Pretty throwing mechanics
And he can take off for big gains
How does he compare to shaun Hill???? Unlike other stupid head coaches who strictly belive in the Mccshays, Mayocks and Kipers of the world to draft....drafting a qb this yr high was asinine (unless it was WATSON). Those other 1st rd QBs had no buisness being drafted that high especially Mahomes! Our HC actully did the home work in STUDYING and hand picking the qb who he thought had the BEST tools for his complex system. And not going by what the "expert" insinuated!
And just like the bears said they were ALL in on Glennon then LOL shock the world and take Mitch. Or how about when seattle gave hefty contract to Flyn, publicly penciled him as a starter, draft Wilson and it was history from there. Dont sleep becuse CJ has a LEGIT chance to start and make you forget about Kirk. Kirk is good but theres nothing Kirk can do that I see CJ not being able to do and ALOT CHEAPER TO!
So dont put to much stock in Shanny saying Hoyer is the starter, he wouldnt want to break the mans confidence knowing RIGHT THIS SECOND, Hoyer is the best option..not for long tough LOL
I totally agree with not goin with the "expert" pick.

Kyle said it himself that he saw CJ do things that he would be asked to do in Shanahan's offense. It's more than just playing from under center. That's not what 'pro ready' really means. It means making line checks at the line scrimmage, calling out the Mike, identifying fronts to call the optimal run play, progression reads, and the one thing I think Kyle really liked is seeing CJ execute playcation while turning his back to the defense.
One could make an argument that Shanahan's offense is too "old school" and that he isn't adapting to modern football (spread shotgun) to accommodate the QB prospects that are coming out of college. This is what the 49ers hired. He wants to see the QB do certain things. Projecting a QB to be able to audible, learn timing footwork, is a risk Kyle doesn't want to take. He wants to see the QB actually do it on film. This is what drew Kyle's interest to CJ.
welp. There it is. So a subset of a subset of QBs only can even fit in this guys offense.
Meanwhile the league in 3 more drafts will be full of young talented QBs who 95% wouldn't fit in this offense. Great.

Well good thing the QB doesnt have to be replaced every 2 to 3 years. Ypu find yours and get set for atleast a decade.Originally posted by awp8912:welp. There it is. So a subset of a subset of QBs only can even fit in this guys offense.

News flash: only a "subset of a subset of QBs" could fit Walsh's offense, too.
