lol. good s**t, coach.

I read this quote in 2 articles and is why I think they are going all in for Cousins next year.

no doubt.
One scout said he had the best anticipation skills of any of the QBs in the draft. Really surprised he was the only QB kyle wanted.

I have a feeling he's going to compete more then any of us thought. He seems more ready then most of the other QBs

This is the quarterback that Kyle liked the most in the draft. He thinks that he has the best skill set and tools that will translate to Pro success, especially in his system. Now he is banking everything on it. he drafted him and will develop him the best he can, and if he doesn't like the progress or think it is going where he wants it to, next season he will go after Cousins, Garapollo or someone in the draft.

Pretty much this is him taking who he thought was the best QB in this draft and seeing where it goes, gives him a year to gauge his development and if it isn't good enough they are going to get someone else next season. I think it is very smart. This guy could surprise us all and I think we all hope he does.

Are you sure this is the quarterback Kyle liked most in the draft? I think it's safe to say, "This is the quarterback Kyle liked most in round three when they were picking."

Good analysis tho

Yeah, Kyle seemed to perk up when talking about Trubisky but the value of that trade back was too good to pass on from a "team standpoint." IMHO, there was really, only 2 or 3 QB's Kyle felt comfortable with: Trubisky, Peterman and Beathard. The latter two, being far more pro ready in this offense than Trubisky b/c of the pro-style offenses they played in and how their specific offenses translate to Kyle's here. I had Peterman and Beathard valued much higher than the rest of the league b/c of these factors. And when you watch tape side-by-side of both Peterman and Beathard, it's neck and neck in terms of talent and translation skills to Kyle's offense.

IMHO, Kyle believes he can develop Beathard into a starter the same way he did with Cousins and in a similar fashion as his time in Washington; he will have a chance to develop him over 1.5-2 years and he should be pro-ready to start then or, at worst case, become a very valuable backup seen with starting potential like Garoppolo (b/c he'll be seen as properly developed around the NFL d/t Kyle's acumen) = trade bait.

In terms of perception, outside of New England, I can't think of one team more than SF that could carry that perception of a "QB development factory." That can't be understated. And don't give up on Barkley either. Cohn noted that for Kyle's first full team practice open to the public, Kyle spent the entire time with the QB's and WR's. That should tell you something...

I predict he beats out Barkley for the #2 job behind Hoyer.

There was a very small list of very smart GMs and coaches who loved CJ Beathard. Will be interesting to watch.

That'd be great, but I don't have big expectations for him in 2017. I expect the plan is to bring him along slowly and surely. I'm optimistic he'll be a solid backup for us for many years.

We will not be in a position to draft Darnold next year. We were historically bad last year, and we still couldn't secure the #1 pick in the draft. If he is as good as you say he is, the worst team in the NFL will draft him and wouldn't be willing to trade him to anyone. Even if they were, we would have to trade the farm to get him.

You nailed it! They purposely drafted the worst QB in the draft in order to get that #1 pick for next year.
<sarcasm>
*insert canned laughter here*

Nobody remotely implied that.
Which is why the word "sarcasm" was included in the post.
"sarcasm" in American English. › literature remarks that mean the opposite of what they say
Maybe sarcasm was the wrong word since it implies contempt or ridicule. How about "just kidding"

I personally have no problem with the pick. If he's Shanahan's guy, then that's good enough for me. I don't think that we are going pick in the top 10 next year either. I also don't think Beathard will see the field next year but do hope he has the chance to be #2 within the next couple years after Hoyers contract runs out.and with any luck compete for the #1 spot. Who knows one day after the draft?

Whooo! Good to hear, he will come after Cousins next year and we have a backup/ future for years to come if he develops.
shanahan likes him, im down. someone said he has the best anticipation out of all the draft qbs, he has great arm strength, super smart and hes "tough as s**t" im intrigued, never heard of the dude. also the last time we drafted a 3rd round QB after a 2 win season...Joe Montana
Shanahan compares him to Cousins. I think that's actually pretty accurate, not just coach speak. He is a similar athlete. The tempo he plays at and the way he throws the ball is reminiscent of Cousins.

I've heard some say he has a noodle arm. There are clips of him throwing the deep post 60 yards downfield with good trajectory and velocity. That's enough arm strength. Throws well enough rolling right or left off play action. I can see why Shanahan likes the guy. I don't know if he'll develop into a starter, but his style is what Shanahan looks for.

No, he's got a real nice arm. I don't know where this weak arm stuff is coming from.

I was thinking the same, but who knows what we'll get with Beathard. Keeping the hope alive.

That pretty much sums it up right there.

These were the things Kyle stated before the draft, that he'd like from a QB (in no particular order):

Kyle Shanahan's Own Check-Box Exercise:
  • Quick Processer (can go fast in the pocket; can think fast and react; how quick their decision making is under duress)
  • Pure Thrower (natural throwing motion; born to throw; effortless; to where he doesn't have to think about it ever)
  • Natural Feel for the Game (automatic; feel and react)
  • Smart (can handle the whole offense; handle it all under pressure; smart but doesn't over-process things)
  • Fearless (against the rush; in the pocket; no hesitation; lets it rip)
  • Tough (hangs in the pocket and takes hits)
  • Demeanor (how he carries himself; leadership; likable)
  • Eyes (Keeps his eyes downfield; doesn't start watching the rush instead)
  • Quick Release (Can get rid of the ball quickly/fast)
  • Passion and Determination

Safe to say, 'Tough' and 'Fearless' are VERY high on his list.
