I don't want to suggest that CJ is a future Hall of Famer, but because of the Iowa connection I got to thinking that CJ's play kind of reminded me of Kurt Warner. So I did some comparisons just to see. They are/were both 6' 2" and about the same weight except Warner was maybe 10 pounds heavier and with more mass in his upper body. I couldn't find any video of Warner playing in college but I did find this one of him playing in Germany in 1998 (he graduated college in 1993):

I compared that to how CJ looked in this game against Illinois:

I think there are a fair number of similarities in how they played. They both were solid in the pocket - steady even in the face of knowing they are about to get clobbered. Warner actually looked a little more antsy in the pocket than CJ on occasion. CJ seemed to have a better feet action and throwing base more often than Warner. Warner was more accurate in his throws. They seem to have similar throwing styles except Warner had maybe a bit more zip because of greater upper body strength and follow through with his throwing shoulder. CJ is a noticeably better scrambler - not great but not bad. Both seem to have (seem to have had) the ability to scramble out to the left and throw with pretty good accuracy.

Same here, but...

Step One: teach him to slide
Step Two: teach him to move in the pocket
Step Three: Win

Step four: throw some damn tight spirals.
I watched a whole lot of this kid since we drafted him trying to see something. What I saw was this kid throws a whole lot of lame ducks, even at the underwear bowl combine with no pads

What I saw on video was a very catchable ball. There is a bit of a wobble on his ball that allows receivers a better view...and since many were deep, well placed balls for completions I don't see a problem.

It's all in the hips. He has great footwork and a nice arm.. when he combines it with hips.. he could have a great arm, it'll definitely tighten his spiral too. It's not like he never throws a tight spiral, it's just a consistency thing. He'a gonna be just fine.

Honestly if we aren't winning games with Boyer I'm throwing him out on the field maybe after the bye week. I'd like to see if we have anything with this kid before going all in with qbs next yr.

We all know Boyer/Barkley aren't the future so let's see what he can do after learning the system for the first 11 weeks...we lose big deal gives us a better chance at a top qb prospect next yr

Well, that about sums that up! Good eye Shanny...when you just watch the tape and for specific traits and duties as they translate to the NFL, it's a whole lot easier than focusing on combine crap (esp. for QB's).

There was this show on last night, something called, We the Fans, or something like that. They highlighted Bears fans and ironically, they kept showing Bears game with Barkley at the helm...dude played terrific if not for one of the worst case of droppsies I've even seen from one team. It was like watching us. Barkley might end up being a quality depth for us...potential push starter...don't count him out either.

I watched that game it was weird how many drops their was for sure...I'm gonna say mehhh with Barkley I've watched too many other games that show why he's not a starter in this league. Neither Barkley or Boyer are durable either so I wouldn't be surprised if CJ plays at some pt.

I agree. The back half of the schedule after the bye looks easier, so they should just throw CJ in there and we should see what we have in him.
I don't think it would be a wise move to play him more than a game or 2. See Clv and how they're running thru qb's every 2 years. We'd essentially Cody Kessler him. Hey you're unprepared and on a lousy team now win or get benched forever. If Hoyer and Barkley run their courses or get hurt he's 3rd string and has to step up but otherwise you let him sit and learn and trust that Shanny will know if we need to bring in another rookie. Cousins is a no brainer should he become available.

But Kessler played good. Just got concussed TWICE.

I think that's why Jackson shut him down at the end of the year after he was cleared. Didn't want to ruin him for nothing.

I'm actually glad he's going to get a chance to compete this offseason. Truly believes he wins the job and keeps it barring injury
