Why are people still complaining about this pick? Shanahan wanted him badly, and Lynch got him for him. Who says CJ will only be a career back up? Can you see into the future? If so, what are this weeks Powerball numbers going to be? Shanahan likes CJ to Kirk Cousins, not saying he'll have the same career or anything like that, but if Shanahan likes him a lot, then spending a VERY LATE 3rd on this guy is worth it. Back up QB's cost quite a bit these days, so even if that's all he ends up being for us, then we have a very cheap back up QB for 4 years, that will allow us to spend money else where on the team.
Now if things go good for CJ, then perhaps in a year or two, he gets his chance to become the starter, and who knows where we go from there. Just because some people say it's a reach doesn't make it so, also look at all the guys we got as UDFA's, some of those guys were projected to go in the 3rd-4th round, and we got them for FREE, so perhaps reaching a round or so on a guy Shanahan wanted badly doesn't seem so bad to me, to guarantee we get him. Not to mention word is out that another team was looking at CJ in the 3rd, so if they didn't take him in the 3rd, he easily would have been taken in the 4th.
Time to move on from this,,,,

This. We have no basis to hate or love this pick until he plays in the NFL.

I can look in the past and tell you Jordan Willis in the 3rd round was a far better value pick than CJ....No need to look into the future , we are in the now. Willis was the better pick hands down and fits a immediate need now. Not 1 or 2 years down the road when Shanny finds his franchise QB not named CJ. Stick to you opinion and I will do the same....We don't need to validate that with anyone.

Willis was picked 31 spots before Beathard. They were not even in the same area code as far as where they were selected, so I don't know why you compare the two. I liked Willis as a prospect too, but thats all these guys are......a prospect. We'll find out 3 years down the line who the best guys are.
Theres a reason Willis went 3rd round. He's a talented guy but pretty unrefined and piled up numbers against Big 12 right tackles who won't even sniff the NFL. Projecting him to LEO, going up against NFL left tackles, was a huge leap imo.

DRAFT ANALYSIS:
"C.J. Beathard had mostly fifth-, sixth-round grades from the teams I spoke with. Obviously has great NFL lineage, the Beathard name famous for talent evaluation, and I thought his tape was down a little bit this year. I thought he was better as a junior. Very smart, understands where to go with the football, better arm than expected when you really sit down and study him. I haven't seen him live, and the people who went to his Pro Day told me he had an excellent day." -- Mike Mayock
OVERVIEW
A lot of people know that the Hawkeyes' signal caller is the grandson of former NFL general manager Bobby Beathard -- but now C.J. is a father in own right after he and his girlfriend welcomed a girl (Lyla) into their world in December. He was the most prolific quarterback in Tennessee his final two years of high school (runner-up for one of the state's Mr. Football awards). As a redshirt freshman, Beathard played a little (9-27, TD, two INT) and the following year he saw the field more often (nine games, one start, 645 yards, five TD, two INT). He was given the reins of the offense as a junior, earning team MVP and second-team All-Big Ten honors by completing 61.6 percent of his passes for 2,809 pass yards, 17 touchdowns and just five interceptions. Beathard wasn't as effective as a senior (56.5 completion pct, 1,929 yards, 147TD, 10 INT) but is still considered a solid developmental prospect.
ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS
Played in pro-style passing attack, working under center and from shotgun. Capable and confident rolling out. Squares shoulders to deliver strikes. Completed 57 percent of his passes outside of the pocket at Iowa. Showed improved touch on short throws. Footwork and pocket mechanics look solid. Throws with some natural accuracy despite pedestrian completion percentage. Better tape in 2015 as he had to overcome injuries to key targets in 2016. Has the arm strength to throw the deep out without laboring. Trusts his line and keeps eyes downfield. Plays with relatively calm demeanor. Good feel and timing for screen game. Knee brace slowed him some during senior season, but he has ability to escape the heat. Team leader with ability to handle adversity. Won't take unnecessary chances.
WEAKNESSES
Hesitation is a noticeable issue. Often late to pull trigger on throws toward the sideline, forcing receivers into boundary and out of the catch. Slow field scanner who tends to lock into a single side. Too much eye-balling and not enough manipulating. Poor feel for pocket pressure. Two-year sack total of 58 is too high in play-action attack. Anchors deep in pocket and rarely climbs pocket to safe harbor. Oblivious to backside pressure until it's too late. Needs more air under the long ball. Deep-ball accuracy has been terrible. Completed under 30 percent of throws beyond 20 yards in last two seasons at Iowa. Completed just 43 percent of throws beyond line of scrimmage to right sideline.
DRAFT PROJECTION Rounds 6-7
NFL COMPARISON Tom Savage
BOTTOM LINE
Pro-style quarterback who dealt with nagging injuries to key pass catchers and himself in 2016. His 2015 tape was more impressive, but deep-ball accuracy issues, poor pocket awareness, and unnecessary hesitation as a passer shows up in both seasons. Beathard plays checkers with safeties rather than chess, which could always hinder his ability to attack down the field with success. Could be a career backup who finds himself in the action at some point down the road.

Dude, we used our true third on Witherspoon. Then we traded the next true third round pick to the Saints for a 2018 second rounder.
We used our 4th round pick combined with a 7th rounder to move up a couple spots into the very end of the third at #104.
Where was Willis drafted?

I like this pick, the kid has a decent completion % compared to the other QB's in this draft, and had far less weapons to work with. Hoyer can start for a season, maybe two while CJ develops. If he turns into third round gold, great, if not he looks to have the stuff of decent back up. If we get Cousins great, we have a back up, with trade value. If we don't, and a better prospect is on the board when we draft next year, great take him, Hoyer still starts, and both CJ, and next years rookie learn on the pine. This is who a good team does it, so relax, get off the GM's ass, let them have chance to do what they were brought here to do, fix this f**king mess!

Jordan Willis-Drafted with the 73rd pick.
CJ Beathard-Drafted with the 104th pick.
No offense to your math skills but the numbers don't add up, Beathard was taken almost a round later than Willis.

Both were selected in the 3rd and there are plenty of guys like Willis from lesser programs that have flourished in the NFL. Just because you play against better college players doesn't mean you will in the pros. IMO, knowing Shanny wants his franchise QB ( Cousins ) why pass up better value for a back up guy. I understand the family connect stuff Bobby B. but 3rd round.....Nah
Also, this draft was loaded with quality edge players and teams who are set at the position won't draft low priority high. That's why Willis was there in the 3rd, and the QB class was the weakest of any group, minus K / P.
