So let me get this straight, the Niners passed over DE (LEO) Jordan Wills in the 3rd for a guy they could have got in the 5th or 6th....A guy with career back up talent over a player of immediate need....Our draft was going great until this pick and the 5th round pick!!!!!!!!

Jordan Willis-Drafted with the 73rd pick.

CJ Beathard-Drafted with the 104th pick.

No offense to your math skills but the numbers don't add up, Beathard was taken almost a round later than Willis.
Both 3rd rounders, no math required

I'm probably going to regret asking this but in your mind, how do you see the 49ers as having passed over a guy who was taken 31 picks earlier to draft Beathard?

lol this guy is awesome.
It's the same way the Saints passed on picking Myles Garrett in the 1st round, and instead drafted that bum Ramczyk at 32 :)

Right? Makes about the same amount of sense. In pretty much any other draft the pick that Beathard was drafted at is the 5th or 6th pick in the 4th round of the draft. It was only a 3rd rounder this year because of the unusually high number of comp picks. Willis and Beathard have absolutely nothing to do with one another.

The question i have a hard time answering... Why do you care?

Both were selected in the 3rd and there are plenty of guys like Willis from lesser programs that have flourished in the NFL. Just because you play against better college players doesn't mean you will in the pros. IMO, knowing Shanny wants his franchise QB ( Cousins ) why pass up better value for a back up guy. I understand the family connect stuff Bobby B. but 3rd round.....Nah
Also, this draft was loaded with quality edge players and teams who are set at the position won't draft low priority high. That's why Willis was there in the 3rd, and the QB class was the weakest of any group, minus K / P.

We don't know enough about these guys to make the determinations you want to make, especially 3rd rounders. Who knows if Willis will be a more valuable player than Beathard. Nobody knows that, they haven't played a snap.

And again, Willis was taken 31 spots before Beathard. We did not choose Beathard over Willis. I guess we took Witherspoon 66th overall over Willis, and I'm cool with that. He's likely a starter corner opposite Robinson which we needed badly.

Pass rusher is also a big need to me. We didn't address it early in the draft, its just not the way their board fell. I have no gripes about Thomas, Foster, or Witherspoon. They were really good picks. Edge rusher is something we have to address in the future, but in the meantime, we got some really good players at other areas of need.

I'm also cool with grabbing Beathard late in the 3rd, he was the guy Shanahan hand picked from this draft. Same thing with Joe Williams, hand picked by Shanahan. Its good Lynch goes out and gets the offensive guys Shanahan really wanted for his system.

Well, it took me a while to "get" the draft so hey, more power to you.

You don't like the pick and I get it, my initial reaction was somewhat negative. My initial reaction to trading our third to the Saints was kinda negative too.

Either way we had a great draft and the new HC/GM are off to a good start. It feels good to be a Niner fan again. Enjoy.
enough with this basic math non sense lol lets talk about our future hall of fame quarterback CJ Beat hard!!!

Funny they closed the QB of the future thread because we drafted Beathard.

Can we reopen that thread?

Considering Walsh traded for Young when he already had Montana...Yes!
