Not going to come in here and state he's a can't miss player. I do want to correct a few things.

His arm strength is fine. He has a cannon. He was handicapped by an awful OC that didn't let him air it down field. His WRs were awful. Like SunBelt level bad. No separation, poor route running, etc. His playcaller Greg Davis was pretty poor.

Iowa gets the benefit of the doubt on oline b/c they have such a pristine reputation at the position. Last years and even 2015 lines, were stellar at run blocking. Very bad at pass protection. Slow feet and out of position. CJ took a lot of punishment he shouldn't have.

He comes from a family with a winning pedigree. His mechanics are good. He has NFL size and arm. Super gritty player. Leader. It wasn't a bad pick.

Most Iowa fans are intrigued to see what he can do because we have never really had great QB development since Hayden Fry in the 80s. He has all the tools and is a willing learner.

I hear a lot of people think he looked like a gamer in 2015. He developed a sports hernia in week 3 vs Pitt. He was severely limited (75%) for the rest of the year and led Iowa to a 12-0 regular season. Nearly won the Big Ten championship too. Dude just won and put the team on his back and took punishment.

Upside is through roof. Now upside doesn't pay diddly, but there's reason to have optimism.

Check out his ISU 2015 highlights from 2015 ,week before the sports hernia. He played incredibly poised.

He seems to have good mobility too. Not going to say Joe Montana, but damn they share similar attributes!

Great to hear from a Iowa fan!

Kirk Ferentz was on local radio yesterday and said a lot of the same things you did. Mentioned his toughness, arm strength, and intelligence. Also acknowledged the supporting cast around him was lacking. Pass pro was poor, lost their top WR from 2015 and guys had trouble creating separation for him. Its clear there were several factors going into it his "regression" in 2016.

When I was watching a few of his games I though he was underrated going into the draft. Ultimately I was surprised how high he actually went, I didn't think he'd be selected until the middle of Day 3. But this was the guy Shanahan coveted. He sees him as a perfect fit for his offense, and thats what we all wanted going into the draft....for Shanahan did get the guy he wanted. I'm interested to see what he can do.

Odd in a way, that the kid who was our ball boy about a thousand yrs ago during the Walsh glory yrs, who watched his dad, the OC mastermind behind some of our SB wins, followed in the footsteps of his dad, and grew up with a passion to coach. Then when he gets his big chance, this kid with the 9er lineage going way back, has as his #1 QB developmental pick , a kid whose dad and granddad were both big time NFL people, both on the field and in coaching/ GMing. I won't say it finishes the circle, but it is fact and something to think about. One line of greatness, meshes with another.

Trying to think back, I can't come up with any other set of similar circumstances. Yet that is where we are, wondering how this is all going to turn out. Anybody know of something similar?

Get that soccer mom gut into the weight room ASAP, please! I don't hate the pick (I did when I heard it, b/c I never even bothered to watch the guy), but FFS, look like a professional athlete. On the bright side, he finally nailed the hair/facial hair combo that makes him look the most socially-acceptable.
