Theres no dog in the race here. If cj blossoms great, if not oh well. Its someone the hc liked and wanted to work with. Since qb is the most important roster spot, its ok to indulge here. I have every confidence this staff will spend just the right amount of time on this guy to evaluate his trajectory. I dont see shanny keeping him around because hes afraid to say it didnt work out. How refreshing is that.

Could probably type up a list right now of posters who are going to be giving this guy s^^t from the get go. Can't say I am particularly vested in any of the team's QBs right now. Certainly don't think Hoyer is the answer, have no opinion at all on Barkley and am taking a wait and see attitude towards the rookie. Hopefully one of them will step and help make the team competitive this year, or at the very least slightly more respectable than last year.
Just waiting for next year, when it's either going to be Cousins, Garoppolo are a high draft pick.

That was the whole point tho, 81...nobody is particularly vested in anybody this yr at qb except Hoyer ,when long before the draft, kyle and john wanted a Qb who could run the plays , had QB attributes that kyle liked, and was deemed decent enough to get us thru the first season, as all other players learned the WCO . They both knew early on that the qbs this yr were substandard, except for one taken in rd 3-4 and that was CJ. But not to run the team. That was given to Hoyer to do. Meantime, kyle and john could then concentrate on the remainder of the team to replace, rebuild and move forward. Pretty cool reasoning now that we have seen a)the Qbs taken and b) the massive holes lynch had to fill. OL got fixed with Zuttah, Center being our weakest link on the OL, then Jusczyk , a terriific OW out of the backfield, eihter wth or without the ball, (great hands receiver, too). Then built up the D with adding the second best player in the draft, Solomon, and then somehow got the best LB in foster. Ahkello at CB, we shall see. Then great little adds here and there with Joe W, who is a lot more than a "little" add on, Kittle, Taylor, and so on.
Hoyer was just someone to get us thru this yr...they could not imagine Kap doing that....at least not the way kyle uses his Qb....so early on, before any journeyman QB was taken, kyle wisely took the one guy he had coached before, and who knew his system. Also he has some of Kyle's QB essentials.
Then on top of all that, Lynch bankrolled an early #2 and #3 for next yr, to give us ammo to move up in draft if need be. Meantime, many of us think that there is a handshake agreement between Cousins and kyle for next season. Just a lot of serious good planning across the board. AND, if the handshake agreement goes south, HC and GM are still positioned to get that FR QB next yr. Also they will learn if Hoyer has a shot at being our #1 guy going into the future. Not likely, but their reasoning was terrific.
So it isn't so much as being invested in our Qb, 81, it was a conscious decision to go wiht the most able WCO QB out there, sign him early, get it done and then forget about QB this yr, save for one developmental FR QB, who will get to sit and learn, and then get maybe a little PT if we get a big lead (unlikely) or worst case, injury to Hoyer. The main objective in a poor qb yr was to get the rest of the team weeded out, thinned, and then replaced with guys with talent. We had 4 or 5 WRs who had been here, 2-3 yrs and were either injured or worthless. Yet they remained. Same for several OLs. And soon we will see some of the not quite good enough DLs weeded out, same for LBs, and then who knows about the DBs
Gotta admit, with so many holes, incl Qb, setting the position aside for yr 1 (of a 6 yr contract) was pretty dang smart on kyle and john's part. Prior to FA and draft, i had no idea just how they were going to remake this basket case. Just way too much to fix. So they set Qb aside. They'll work on that next yr. Meantime they got the best journeyman qb out there.
Just for overall planning how to attack this semi pro mess....i I give them a strong A.

Saw some articles yesterday about how CJ's passes floated a bit when throwing into the wind...
"Third round pick C.J. Beathard led the first team offense under center and struggled early in the session throwing into the wind, but appeared more comfortable as the day wore on during his first practice in Kyle Shanahan's offense." Niners Nation
We're having some strong storms out here. I check the weather for yesterday and the winds in Santa Clara during practice where 15-20 mph with gusts to 30... Having balls flutter in that kind of headwind says little about his arm strength.
Grant Cohn said he looked bad...what would we expect from Grant....Why am I even mentioning him?
KNBR said his arm more than passed the test...
All eyes were on San Francisco's third-round pick, and although he was surrounded by a makeshift supporting cast, there was plenty to like from Beathard. He threw both some touch passes and rocketed a few lasers over the middle, connecting on one with tight end George Kittle for a sizable gain. His arm and his size passed the initial test with flying colors. Where Beathard needs most work is on the bootleg, a staple of Kyle Shanahan's offense. After rolling to both his right and left, passes lost some accuracy. It'll be a point of emphasis the rest of the spring and throughout training camp. Shanahan was more hands off today than he was last week during voluntary veteran minicamp. But they'll be plenty of tape to look at in the film room.

Well said. I agree that Kyle will try to develop him, and if he doesn't work out... He won't be here for long. I didn't think we would rake any if the guys in this years draft in the first two rounds anyway. I have a different opinion about next year's possibilities. It will be interesting to watch next off season play out.

INDIANAPOLIS - Bobby Beathard had a long and distinguished career as an NFL personnel man, and it included playing a key role in the Dolphins winning their two Super Bowl titles.
Beathard is 80 years old now and his football evaluation days are over, so his only role when it comes to 2017 draft prospect C.J. Beathard is that of proud grandfather.
"He's always told me I have what it takes, that I'm a great player," C.J. Beathard, a quarterback from Iowa, said at the NFL scouting combine. "He's more just like a grandpa to me, he's not my scout, he' not my coach. He's a great person, a great human being, someone I can model my life after. That's who he is to me."

Is that Greg Roman himself?

Are QB's taken in the 100's usually expected to be good starters in the NFL?
Rhetorical question.
This seems more like a gamble taken with an eye on getting another QB in 2018. Shouldn't be any more complicated than that.

Whether they go after Cousins next year, who will be what 30?, or use the ammo they got in this year's draft to move up and get somebody, will be a question for next off season. Was just saying that Beathard's emphasis on winning will put him at odds with a number of posters in here who seem to judge their QB play more on style points than efficiency and results. In the somewhat unlikely event that he emerges as a starter this year but is winning games by scores of 17 to 14 or 13 to 6, I can almost guaranty you that there will be the usual posters who will come in here and complain that his game "isn't exciting enough" or is "boring to watch", the fact that the team is winning under that scenario won't matter to them because they aren't being "entertained" enough or because it wasn't the QB they wanted,e.g. Peterman, Kaaya, Kizer, or whomever. Such is the life of a SF 49er QB.
