Been saying that since Kyle came here and we moved back to the WCO...gonna take 2 full years to develop ANY QB coming out college now...maybe longer with a spread QB.

Hence the love for Kirk...he's already developed and could take us to a team that could be in play for the NFC west title.

A qb like CJ (wanted peterman) who's got some background in a pro offense is who I wanted in the mid rd this yr...look at Jimmy G/Kirk in FA and if not go after a big fish next yr in the draft. Unless CJ comes in a kills it of course (won't hold my breath)
Still see him maxing out as a good backup QB.

Exactly...already developed, ready to roll with or without Kyle...but no doubt he'd be best with Kyle and both parties know it

Great read, thanks. Interesting about the Iowa compliments. I like that we got two guys (CJ and Kittle) that are "taught the right way". Would love to have Scotty Mac back in some non-executive role at SF. The guy can build a roster.

Just don't let him run the draft.

LOL...exactly. Otherwise, we'd be drafting some guy named Reuben fRoster from Wichita State University.

and why would you? Most of us don't have the eye to project forward to see what he or anybody else is going to be. "Sure things" don't pan out sometimes and sometimes the biggest reaches end up being good players. I think all we can do as fans is give the FO the benefit of the doubt until they prove otherwise.

I am changing my tune on him. I saw his footwork on the news the other day. He looked good, but of coarse that was a very small sample size without a defense rushing him.

Wow McCloughan might be an alcoholic but he knows talent

But if we do about as I expect this year, we'll be in a prime position to take Darnold, Allen, or Rosen, and I just can't imagine skipping out on a great QB because you got more value than you hoped for from your 3rd rounder. And plus, he seems like a very good backup QB who can start for you in a pinch. A good backup QB is valuable too.

Agree, although I see Beathard as a 4th rounder. Cousins was taken in the 4th at pick #102. Beathard was taken at #104. Sure it was in the third round but it was basically our 4th round pick mixed with a 7th.

Anyway, if we don't land Cousins there's no way we pass on a QB early in the 2018 draft. Beathard probably isn't even going to play this year. Even if he does he'd need time to learn the new offense.

It's either Cousins or an early 2018 QB for me.

I will say that the highlight videos of Darnold, Allen, and Rosen are pretty amazing. A lot can happen in a year, but those guys look great. What I don't want is that we pay for Cousins at top dollar and get a year or two out of him when we could have had a FQB drafted that's 8 years younger and cheaper.

Isnt that the point of highlight videos? What they dont show is how absurdly inconsistent Allen was. Its not like Wyoming plays a ton of heavy duty competition. Right now he is a 100% projection. He needs to have a better year otherwise he looks like the next Kyle Boller.

The Allen hype mystifies me more than the Kayaa hype a year ago. Take Allen in the 2nd round? Sure. Take him with a Top 5 pick? Hell no.

He'll be 29 this year in his third season starting. I think Cousins could play till he's 37-38 years old. He could start declining around 35.

If we get Cousins in 2018 I think we get at least 4 good years out of him. It would probably be a 5 year contract. We'd want to draft another QB early around 2021. Maybe start drafying guys in rounds 2-3 in 2020.

Thing about drafting a guy in 2018, there's a 50/50 chance he'll sink or swim. It's a huge gamble.

Lets say he doesn't do too well his rookie year or we don't play him his rookie year. Then we have to wait till the 2019 season to really see what we have. If he ends up busting then we have to draft another QB and go through that same process. Some teams get stuck in this cycle for years and years. I don't want to be that team.

I feel good about Shanahan finding/developing a QB but it's still a huge gamble no matter who the HC is. Even Walsh missed on QB's. It happens.

Cousins is a known commodity. There's far less risk and we could be in "win now" mode with Cousins. We're talking a possible super bowl in 2019. A QB ftom the 2018 draft could do the same but the odds are far lower.

Edit: If we do draft a QB as of right now I like Rosen.
