Developmental backup. Kirk is our guy

I think he re-signs with Washington before the July deadline. Just my opinion.

If he ends up re-signing after all this fiasco that would be one of the biggest trick moves of all time in football. I hope he knows that and as a Foreskin fan I would question how loyal he is.

Cousins knows he has the Redskins by the balls. Either they have to pay him a significant amount of money on another tag next year or he gets paid on the open market. No way his agent advises him to sign before July unless he gets a ridiculous offer from the skins.

I think Cousins agent is waiting to see what Carr gets. That will set the market for what Cousins could get.

Cousins could get anywhere from almost 5 mil to an 8 mil guaranteed money increase next season on a tag. Even if the skins paid him per year what he's tagged at this year, thats a significant raise next year that even Carr won't get. Carr's not gonna get three mil a year more than the next highest paid QB. If the skins were willing to pay Cousins around the 25 mil a year that Carr will get, they would have already. Cousins literally has no reason to sign with them. I think Cousins plays this season out and forces the Redskins to tag him or let him walk. Thats my opinion.

I'd like to see Cousins sign with Washington and give Beathard a shot at starting. It would save us a boatload of money for the next couple of years.

and it would cost the 49ers a boatload of wins too. Money is the one thing the 49ers have...

If Beathard can be just as good as Cousins, you got to go with the youngster.

Oh yeah easy. There's no reason to lose sleep there. We'll make the right call, I for sure also think if Cousins was not someone we're banking on then we possibly would of gone trubisky at 2.

that's a big if and wishful thinking. The chances of that reflecting reality is slim to none.

http://ninerswire.usatoday.com/2017/05/01/kyle-shanahan-landed-only-quarterback-he-wanted-in-nfl-draft/
"Iowa's signal caller, after all, was projected to get taken much later after completing just 56.5 percent of his passes and throwing for 1,929 yards last season. But San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan decided beforehand Beathard was the only quarterback for him among the incoming rookies.

From The MMQB's Peter King:

. . . someone suggested moving from early in the fourth round to late in the third, five spots up, to snare the only quarterback Shanahan wanted in this draft: Iowa's C.J. Beathard. "We'd all sleep a little better if we got him instead of waiting 'til tomorrow," York said.

So they dealt for the 104th pick to choose Beathard, the grandson of former Super Bowl GM Bobby Beathard. "He processes the game so well," Shanahan said. "Tough as s—. Got a chance. He reminds me a lot of Kirk Cousins.""

Even if he's not as good and remotely close, you go with CJ and don't look back. He literally needs to be good-great enough honestly cause that extra 25-30 million can get you a few pro bowlers possibly. Or simply keeping a lot of your talent that makes your team super competitive year in and out.

Maybe not this year, but I can see it happening next year or down the road.

Historical odds suggest Beathard will be a career backup/marginal starter. From 1975 to 2015, exactly two QBs picked in the 3rd round were Pro Bowlers. Joe Montana and then Russell Wilson was the next guy to do it.

Neither Shanahan or Lynch are ignorant to Beathard being a longshot. If they have an opportunity to sign Cousins, that is what they will do.

This approach worked smashingly for Houston. I dont see where you can go wrong putting your franchises's future and the most important position on the field in the hands of a marginal player.
Well, if Beathard looks good and plays well if given a chance I'm not so sure that is true.

You're sort of cherry picking the 3rd round thing too. There have been other QBs who were pro bowlers selected far later. The round itself isn't all that relevant with QB play unless you're looking at the 1st/2nd. After that it's pretty random in distribution of success IIRC.

We will see how well Shannahan evaluates QBs I guess. I kind of like what I see in Beathard.

The odds get even worse the further down you go in the draft. People always point to the exceptions but not the 50 other guys who couldnt hack it at all. The 49ers bought themselves a lottery ticket and are hoping they can win big. Odds are that Beathard winds up like a Hoyer type and I'd be perfectly fine with that.

Skill in evaluation is only a small part of it. Luck is a HUGE part of it, especially later on in the draft. If the Patriots had any inkling of what Tom Brady could be they wouldnt have passed on him twice in the 6th round alone.

Bill Walsh was right on Montana and Young but felt Giovanni Carmazzi could turn into an NFL starter and urged the Colts to pass on Peyton Manning.

Ron Wolf, one of the premier talent evaluators of all time has talked extensively about how much finding a QB is equal parts good scouting, coaching and scheme plus a whole lot of luck.

Its a crapshoot but I think its a moot point overall. Drafting Beathard to me means the 49ers think there is a very good shot of Cousins being available and if he is I expect them to go all in on him with Beathard projecting as the long term backup.
