You dont trade up like that for a backup..if they just stood pat they could get him in or 4th or even 5th

You don't know where he would've been drafted.

Who would have drafted him before us in fourth

Bro watching the Niners this year will be exactly like this:

Shanny's offense is so complex, only a subset of s**tty QBs can actually run it. Amazingly it's produced no Superbowls.

CJ Beathard set to be Kirk Cousins long-term backup for the #49ers. Shocking that he went above Nathan Peterman.

They moved up a few slots and gave up basically nothing. It's a head scratcher for sure, but don't act like he's automatically the FQB cause they moved up a few picks lol

They coulda gotten him in the 5th

You don't know that

He's a smart guy, got a strong arm, and runs a pro style system.

To be honest, he should be starting over Hoyer. I hope he earns it.
I guess he got teased a lot as kid ..BEAT HARD.

It cost us a 7th to move up from the 4th to the 3rd. Is the loss of the 7th upsetting?

I find it interesting that some would think they can evaluate what it takes to be an NFL QB better than Shanny.

I'm just puzzled by trading up for Beathard. If Shanahan likes him that is fine, I'm just not optimistic that he'll ever live up to his draft status. This is a 5th, 6th round kinda dood IMO.

This was weirder than most of Baalke's weirdest picks. Most people had this guy going anywhere from the 5th round to undrafted. He's a career backup QB type with a very limited arm, inconsistent accuracy, not great pocket presence, basically a subpar game manager.

Super bright, picks up offenses easily and comes out of a pro style offense but my mind is blown that they actually traded up to take the 4th or 5th best QB that was available at that point.

He was the best QB available according to Shanny.

He actually has a pretty strong arm. He is good outside the pocket and runs a lot of play action which is exactly what Kyles offense uses. Now that I sit and think about it the pick makes a lot of sense. This was Kyles pick all the way and if you trust his judgement when it comes to QB's then you should just leave it at that and see how the kid develops.

#49ers coach Kyle Shanahan thought very highly of QB C.J. Beathard and believed he was the best fit for his system.

'Nuff said

Yep, I trust Shanny - he knows who's best for his system.
Gotta love all the experienced QB evaluators who are upset with this pick. If KS preferred CJ over Peterman and Dobbs, then clearly he had the guy rated higher because he thought he would be a better system fit. You would think by now that people would realize that only bad teams settle for "best QB on the board" and ignore little things like if the guy can learn and operate your offense.

But some of you guys know more than KS, who actually has been doing this professionally for years and has a pretty solid track record.
