How bad must beathard be in practice to not replace Mullens? He is terrible.

Exactly, most back ups aren't very good. They might steal you a game or two. If they start long term and teams get film on them it typically goes downhill fast. Best to have a former starter in case of emergency back up QB. Saints have been smart with back ups. Eagles with Foles.
Steelers offense was awful last year with a drafted back up.
Mullens is probably the best current backup that was never a team's starting quarterback. That isn't a good thing, and with Jimmy G hurt too often a better back up should have been on the roster. You can't afford to have Steve Bono as a 3rd string QB now

I wish we as 49er fans, can elevate our standards from Mullens or Jimmy
No one here is satisfied with Jimmy's play, well I don't think. But the fact many here called Mullens better than Jimmy was pure insanity, the qb position can definitely be upgraded
I still think Mullens isn't far off from Jimmy. I felt like he had more than he's shown us so far, but his body language is very telling.
Doesn't change the fact that I believe both are trash.

Mullens wouldnt start on any other team. healthy Jimmy could start on a couple teams, Pats, Jets, WFT, Jags, couple others

Isn't far off yet compare Jimmy's record to Mullens'. There's a reason why Jimmy wins when he's sees the field compared to sorry ass Mullens. It isn't always pretty but Jimmy when healthy has won

Mullens was an UDFA and has shown he can't play with any consistency. One or two good plays followed by a turnover or a bonehead play.
Beathard was a 3rd round pick that Shanny wanted but he's reluctant to put him in for any length of time. He must look really bad in practice to not be able to replace Mullens.

Lynch and Shanahan have failed in bringing in a franchise QB. Jimmy G is ok, but he is not top tier QB. And yes if you want to win in this league, you need to score some points, and be elusive. We need a new quarterback, plain and simple. We have plenty of opportunities to draft a top franchise quarterback have ended up picking players like Solomon Thomas and McGlinchey. Traded up to get CJ Beathard ?. On top of the bad QB play, the offensive line can't block a turtle. There is a lot of fixing to be done up front. I don't have any faith that they will draft well in that area. If they do get a another QB, it will be probably another FA Shanahan guy.

Yeah, it really is time to see what CJ can do.

sure I get it! Mullens is not playing to the level we all expect him to, but makes me wonder how Jimmy G would play with this roster that is looking more like week 4 of preseason...

We've seen what CJ Beathard can do. He's a slow processor who struggles to see and feel pressure. I cringe watching the guy just freeze in the pocket when a rusher is bearing down on him because he just takes the punishment and gets smashed. Is he tough or his brain fried from all the damage he's taken in college and NFL? Sure, he has a stronger arm and can push the ball down the field, but he has no clue where it's going when it leaves his hand.
People need to accept that we're stuck playing with backups, both of whom are not good when forced to play for prolonged periods of time. It is what it is. Hopefully, next season we'll have a talented young player behind Jimmy or whoever is starting.

The oline scares me even with Jimmy but I would be willing to bet we win today's game with Jimmy and the Eagles game. For the flack Jimmy gets he wins ball games, dude was never healthy except week 1

What's the worst that can happen? If he stinks it up Mullens will be back in there.

Mullins=Steve de Berg, just good enough to get you beat. Better than Beathard, so need to move on from both next year. Get a cheap vet who can hold the fort for a game or so here or there, if Jimmy is healthy we win.

The whole nfl knows Mullens can't throw it further than 20 yards.
