I wouldn't be against seeing a competition if Mullens wins out and plays to a high level like Jimmy did last season, however I don't think we have an out in Jimmy's contract until 2020(?) and if that's the case it would make it unrealistic to have a legitimate starting competition because we couldn't easily move his contract. That said, i still think Jimmy would win the QB battle between the two.

For me, I think the most likely scenario would be for us to have Mullens act as the backup and start next season until we are certain that Jimmy is healthy and ready to play (i.e. like the Eagles did with Foles and Wentz). After that, maybe we can trade Mullens to a QB needy team for a day two pick (I wouldn't sell him for less because there's no point)? Or just retain him as insurance to Jimmy.

It is potentially a great situation to be in if Mullens does win out, or at least plays to a high level because it shows we've got an excellent depth chart at the QB position for next season.

Think JG should still get the nod as the starter, but he will have to show he is durable by lasting through the whole season and be just as good as he was after the injury.

If Mullens plays that well we would have to crazy to trade him until JG plays an entire season to prove his durability.
You know why Nick Mullens is the real deal?

It all started with 16. Only other QB to be able to fill those shoes was the one who wore half the number, #8. Mullens has brought another half.
Mullens is the next Drew Brees
Mullens would be locked up under contract for a while. He's the lowest paid player on the team and he's an ERFA after next year, meaning we basically have him guaranteed locked up through 2020 if we want him. No one would be able to negotiate with him after next season since we have exclusive rights.

I'll take it since there is so little to be excited about. If he comes back down to earth or even crashes and burns at least I will have enjoyed the moment.

In Jimmy's case he is not exactly injury prone. We aren't talking about a guy that has spent a lot of time on the sidelines with this injury and that injury. From high school to the pros he's been durable and available. Granted I agree with you that Jimmy needs to prove he's healthy and back to the form that got him his big pay day, however when it comes to durability just because Jimmy plays 16 games next season doesn't mean he is going to play 16 games the following season. So we might hold onto Mullens for 2019 and extend him at some point so we have him under contract for at least 2020, but what happens if we trade Mullens prior to 2020 and Jimmy suffers a season ending injury during the 2020?

We can't realistically hold onto the guy forever if he plays well enough to warrant a pay day of his own and the opportunity to be a starting quarterback in this league. It's the same as Jimmy. The Patriots knew they couldn't hold onto him as long as Brady wanted to play, so eventually they had to trade him. In our case, Jimmy is our quarterback unless they decide otherwise and that means that eventually Mullens will move on if he's good enough to warrant a starting position elsewhere. It's only a matter of time.
I didn't get to post Thurs. I wasn't sure we were going to actually play Mullens. If we kept CJ in, we would have locked up the number one pick. I had just accepted we would always lose. As tempting as that puck is, I didn't want to lose every game and wanted to see Mullens play. I was impressed with him in the meaningless pre-season and thought he might light up the Raiders. He sure did. He seems to be a better west coast fit than CJ. I hope he gets to keep playing to see what we got in him. Trade CJ in the off-season if Nick can be the backup next year. I think Savage will be the 3rd guy. I even picked up Mullens and played him last night on my fantasy team for a good night. I too like Nick the Dick better from that movie.

To answer your question, yes.

But that won't happen. We're not beating the Bears AND Seahawks twice when they'll likely be fighting for playoff spots.

I do think there are winnable games after the bye week, though. Before last night it would have been considered a miracle for us to not go winless after the Giants game.

Very happy for this guy, and it seems like the team really likes him. It's so crazy how one game can just totally change a team, the fans, etc. Last week I was saying "tank for Bosa," now Mullens has me standing up clapping and cheering like I'm a teenager again. Lol. I know I'm a homer, but damn it there's nothing like hope as a fan. Let's go, Nick!

Jimmy has clearly shown Mullens a trick or two because the influence was glaring last night on two occasions: the sped up delivery vs the blitz where his feet never leave the ground and he torques his core to get the ball out, and the dropped sidearm delivery to Kittle on the screen, two of Jimmy's specialties.

Side arm around the rushing defender on that screen lol

What Would Jimmy Do

Probably learned from Favre first.

That was cool of Favre to call in to congrats

I thought it was over doing it. Not like it is a situation where he was a childhood hero who he never met. May as well have Nick's best friend or dad on a call.

Just interview the guy and let him talk and have his night.

They went to the same college. Mullins broke Farve's records there.

I'm fairly confident in saying that if Mike McGlinchey started at QB last night, we win comfortably.

Let's not get too carried away here. But enjoy it nonetheless. I'm as happy for Kyle as I am for Nick.

So true. Very well said. It was just simply something good. I'll take it.
