Him and Mostert should be the backs with a late rounder/udfa brought in to compete

I hope we keep Coleman - he's a good back, Breida just gets dinged too much.

I'd like to keep Coleman. It's the 5 million salary I don't like.
Shanahan will Keep Coleman because Shanahan has a total hard on for too much for running backs.

The best backs he's had since coming here have been a guy on his seventh team (Mostert) and a UDFA (Breida last year, and this year before he ended up in the doghouse), yet he gave a huge contract to McKinnon (never played), pounded the table until Lynch agreed to draft Joe Williams in the third round (nothing), and is only getting the "bargain" of paying Coleman 5 million a year because Le'Veon Bell wouldn't come.

With the 9ers cap problems, I'd take Mostert, Breida, and Wilson for the price of just Coleman all day every day.

why do people keep saying this? Almost all of Breida's yards came in the like 5 or 6 games after that he did absolutely nothing.

Two weeks before getting injured he averaged 5.2 ypc and had 78 rushing and 14 receiving. He had a bad game against the Seahawks in week 10, true, but his second worst game of the season was week 1.

If you want to talk about a bad six game stretch look at Coleman from weeks 9 through 14.

Lol second worse ?? Did you not see week 10 through week 17 ?? He wasnt even in the game at the end against Arizona. He had like a few long runs that improved his stats

It's a fair statement regardless. I won't speak for the poster, but he included both Mostert and Breida as being "the best".

Yeah there were flashes that showed that Mostert deserved more playing time but to say he was definitively better than Breida based on those flashes, no one could know that for sure. Football and sports in general is riddled with guys who looked good in spurts and then when given more opportunity based on those spurts crashed back down to earth.

Mostert didn't do that, obviously. But as for Breida "doing nothing" that probably in part was due to being slowed a bit by injury (which has been a problem) and then of course the fumbling.

In all honesty, he still looked good to me when he got a carry or two after being in the said dog house. Well, when he didn't fumble of course. There was a carry or two where he ran violently (for his size anyway) and looked as if he was shot from a cannon as soon as he got the ball. Obviously if there is a hole, that helps. But one of our criticisms of Coleman when he was going bad was that he was tentative, indecisive, and almost too patient waiting for a big hole that never opened.

Doesn't matter much anyway as I can't see Breida hanging around because of the way his year ended, the other backs, and other priorities both in trying to keep other players and fill holes with upgrades or added depth. I do hope he lands on his feet somewhere else and has a good career as a complimentary back in a rotation.

He started doing what people critiqued coleman for. Breida was not patient and lacked vision. He ran right into the back of OL. Breida hasnt had a gain more than 10 yards since idk when. He really lost coaches trust with fumbles and letting it affect other aspects of his game. Pass Blocking, Catching etc.
I think he can be a good contributor as well. Let him be a rotational back and he will be fine. The team tried to make him the bell cow/ lead back but he didnt really take grasp of it. Coleman and Mostert both were handling 20 carries a game.

You have described the running back position.

Let's not lose sight of the point I made, which was that since coming to the 9ers, given all the resources that Shanny has poured into the RB position, the most and second most productive RBs have been a back of the roster nobody and a UDFA. Even another UDFA (Wilson) looked more than serviceable when he was getting touches.

My point wasn't that I think Breida is all world or even the best RB on the team, it was that given their cap situation that they can have all three of Mostert, Breida and Wilson for about the same price as just Coleman they really have to consider that.

My concern is that Shanny seems to really like spending resources on the RB position.

Edit: Just checked and Mostert is making more than I thought this year. Mostert + Breida + Wilson would cost about 6 million whereas Coleman alone is 4.5 million.

Given that Mostert is staying and Wilson will likely stay the question is if you want to pay Coleman 4.5 or Breida 2.2

I don't think Coleman is twice the player Breida is, personally.

He proved latter half of the season that he was. The reason why Shanahan brought Coleman here. He didnt really do anything to prove your theory.

Latter half of the season meaning the final 8 games meaning weeks 9-17?

We're talking about the same Tevin Coleman?

Did you look at the drive at end of the seattle game where he got them to FG to get it OT. Did you see, the games following where he kept his QB clean. Picked up all blitzes with such physicality. Still ran hard and physical. PA still worked with him in there because he ran so hard everytime. He contributed in other ways. Caught a big pass in the cardinals game. Had a good game against the Falcons. He didnt run well but he raised other aspects of his game. Something Breida didnt do

Instead of me thin slicing out individual drives and plays across half a season in which he played poorly rather than thin slicing out drives and plays in which he played well, let's just agree to disagree.

I don't even like the idea of cutting down into half seasons or quarter seasons (why just ignore most of your data?) Let alone some good or bad drive here or there.
