We have this guy named Garcon we just payed...

Some people think he's only a #2 receiver. I see him as like a #1.5

I'm thinking he'll basically be our #1 and Marquise Goodwin will rise to the #2 spot.

As good as Garcon is, he just doesn't worry any DC or DBs..You put a solid CB on him and expect Hoyer to be pickin his self off the ground often..

Watkins has been no great shakes either...Garcon is at least reliable. He is a number one in that regard, he is going to catch the damn ball, he is gonna move the chains and he is gonna be there on game day. Watkins gets hurt, drops things and loses focus a lot more often than a number 1 should. The lack of big play capability does hurt Garcon but I feel like that is why we have Goodwin. If you don't have a corner that can single up and run with Goodwin, and there aren't many fast enough, Garcon is going to have his way drawing single all day. As long as Hoyer can hit that deep ball enough to make teams scared Garcon can function like a number one in this offense.
Will Lake play today?

Watkins is injury prone like Ward

I feel the same way Phoenix does. I don't know what they like in Tomlinson. The guy plays with heavy feet.

I don't get it. Out of all the guards they could have traded for, they acquire a guy who athletically is a lousy fit for the scheme.

This strikes me like a Trent Baalke kind of deal where you add a once highly regarded prospect irrespective of scheme.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it works out in the long run.

Only time will tell.

Still, KS?JL have been pretty solid in player selection so far.

He's better than who our weakest backup OG would have been. That's really all that matters at this point.

I'm not defending or touting the trade at all, but should be noted that Fusco and Beadles are vets and Tomlinson and Garnett are 2nd and 3rd year players.

Point being, Fusco and Beadles aren't getting any better. Tomlinson and Garnett might not either but far better chance of their improvement than the others.

Highly unlikely.
Worth the risk but lets be honest, he isn't very good. If he were the Lions never make this trade. This is their equivalent of getting rid of Vance.

Or from the olden days we just got Sammy Davis from the Chargers.

Yes, he could be better than either Beadles or Garnett in 2017, too. I was speaking as a minimum, not as an ideal.

I wasn't trying to argue your point, I was supplementing it.

Detroit runs an inside ZBS in which Tomlinson sucked, and power-scheme guys like him should be kind of passable.

Hate to be the negative one, but in Shanahan's outside zone scheme everything Tomlinson is decent at isn't asked of him, and everything he's supposed to be awful at is asked of him.

Beadles isn't better than a decent backup, but he's a much, much better scheme fit in the run game.

So, I don't like this trade that much, and am pretty confused by it.

I'm hoping I'm really missing something.

This is true but I think his lack of athletesism can be masked as a RG. Call power runs to to the right behind Brown and Tomlinson and stretch plays to the left behind mobile linemen Staley and Beadles.
I don't think you can hide a bad run blocking guard by making him the backside guard on a stretch run. That backside guard still has to move and not give up ground. Having an offensive tendency of outside zone to the left, and Power to the right is not good.

Yep.

If the backside guard can't hit his reach block you can't bang or bend and are stuck trying to bounce outside every time regardless of what your front side blocking tells you.

We hope they have been. The reality is that we won't know for certain until these guys have played at least a season, if not longer.
This is most interesting to me just in terms of Shanahan's vision with his line. This was one of my main question marks when we brought Kyle in, was that he was basically inheriting a power line with guys like Brown and Garnett. I figured we would have to start making a transition of the years by bringing in guys who fit better. Seeing us double down with another power guard makes me wonder if Shanalynch is planning to adapt the scheme a bit to fit personel.
Have a feeling we will see 2-3 more trades by Saturday. Like them or not.

He led the league in receiving the last time he had Shanny calling plays

Yup. Might be Mayhew's AJ Jenkins.

A guy that whiffs twice on the same player. Mayhew would be in rarefied air.
