After everything I've read here's my lame duck assessment. I'm thinking with his smarts a for now a back-up gaurd and our future center. Smart enough to make all the calls and fast enough as well. Just athletic enough to make a block in reasonable space. Again, low risk/high reward move

Now is not the time for us to be investing a lot in wrs. We've got some glaring weaknesses on the oline and secondary, plus we need a franchise qb.

A. He has been injury prone
B. Hasn't been very good when he has played, huge disappointment for a 1st rounder.
C. Not sure about the scheme fit. He is the opposite of athletic. A plodding power blocker that would have been at home in Harbaugh's scheme.
On the positive side he is a highly intelligent player that should have no trouble picking up the scheme. Consistently executing it and staying healthy, those are a whole other story.
I hope he does well but count me as skeptical in regards to how this will work. It could be that he just needed a change of scenery but his career up to this point has been largely awful. Right now he is a bigger, slower Jordan Devey.
And as this article shows, one of his biggest issues in college which has followed him to the NFL is that he is a lunger. The result is that a pass rusher either flies by him or he has to grab on to them and hold on for dear life when he gets off balance.

Yup that's what I'm saying as well...it's a weird fit, I get the upside but he's not remotely close to a fit for ZBS...good thing is we can cut bait next yr if need be, basically gave up nothing.

He is such a weird contradiction. By all accounts he is super intelligent and a film room junkie but his technique is garbage.
He is super powerful so if he gets his hands on you it is game over but he has a disturbingly high frequency of whiffing on blocks.
And now this scheme basically minimizes all the stuff he is good at while putting an emphasis on the things he has struggled with most.
Buckle up.......

I don't like the fit or the production so far but I'm ok with the move. Lynch and Shanahan have shown to be in lockstep thus far in the players they've aquired. Mayhew drafted him in the first round, so he's spent plenty of time scouting the guy. He should have as good an idea on his capabilities as anyone. Lynch wouldn't have made the move if Shanahan didn't think he could fit the offense.
There's some upside there that the three of them like. I don't expect much from the trade but if Shanahan, Lynch, and Mayhew all like the guy enough to bring him in and promise him a roster spot then I'll keep an open mind on him for now.

just cuz he was drafted in the first, doesn't mean he's any good. Look at Armsdead for example.

Everybody that leaves either sucks so bad that they were the reason the whole team lost every single game ever or They were the linchpin that held everything together and the sky is going to fall followed by it raining toads and a plague of locusts. It is a good move because it is a solid attempt at a stop gap while Garnett is out with maybe a hint of upside that he could stick beyond this year and despite the chorus of moans about a 5th round pick...its a 5th round pick 2 years from now, which is worth what a 7th rounder?
It's best if you join a teams forum and just say you're a Niner fan and are just looking for an honest assessment. And you'll get it...it's not hard to figure out the troll fans from the honest ones, just like in here.

I like the pickup... quality depth and insurance with potentially more down the line and it keeps either Fusco or Beadles working hard, looking over their shoulder while Garnett is out. No free rides!

Yes, he could be better than either Beadles or Garnett in 2017, too. I was speaking as a minimum, not as an ideal.
I wasn't trying to argue your point, I was supplementing it.

Sold...now if he chipped blocked him and blew out his knee, I'd sign him to a LT contract right now.
Payback for Ian Williams.

Has the physical tools to succeed and giving up on a 1st round Olineman after two years could be considered a mistake on their part when you see how undeveloped these kids are now coming into the NFL.
Lol, you trash the 2015 1st round pick we have on our team, that has been hurt, but still has produced at a positive level on the field and then go on to say this guy is underdeveloped but he could be a player. LMAO....
