Well, if that is the case then we find out sooner rather than later about what we jsut bought. And man am i ever hoping for some good news. The fact that was the one guy that kyle and john wanted is good news. They have been pretty darn prescient with their picks. And besides all that, why not find out now, right at the start, what Lake has? I want to know and you know shalyn wants to also. So sure, start Laken first crack out of the box. Whatever we do we start at least one OG who was not here last yr. Let's add to our information and kick his tires while we look under the hood.

If they have some serious doubts, find out now. ..not later. Then you would be depending on something that isn't there. I think this is good news and it is very much in keeping wiht what kyle and john are all about. If this is a flameout, then we start looking immediately for help elsewhere. I got a feeling this is a good kid, maybe he didn't have the world's best coaching, and he turns out to be a gem. It could go the other way though, and it is better to know now what', exactly, we have.
Didn't know it but just listened to 30 min podcast from Al Sacco and "Taylor" supposedly from the Webzone. Got interesting about 25 mins thru when they said that Laken was pretty much living at 49er HQ and they were working with him pretty much full time....as in trying to get him up to speed on his job on the OL, whichever side it is. I'm gonnna guess the side fusco was slated to start on because they already have film on Zane. It's either old news, fake news or could be what actually is going on right before , as in 5 days before our opener. That means my above post was probably pretty close to the mark. They want to know now if Laken is the man...or not. IF not, then keep looking. IF so,...well, then, bonanza.

What? So youre saying were desperately trying to get him ready to start for week 1 to see if he will sink or swim?

Not buying it but im definitely not staying firm on it.
They didn't say it was a given, they just said they really wanted to get him in there ASAP....or PDQ, whichever comes first. I can't see him playing if he doesn't have the simple stuff down. OTOH, the simple stuff is ...well, pretty simple. This will be kinda interesting to watch unfold. Sounds like they were a little squishy, maybe on Fusco? IDK. I'm a litttle surprised they didn't try to get Magnus ready unless they view him strictly as a C alternate. Magnus gave a really good showing, but maybe it wasn't what they wanted.

Fusco is just not a good run blocker at all for this scheme. I think they wait until perhaps week 3 before making the change to Tomlinson. They won't want to dial anything back the first few weeks of the season just to accommodate Tomlinson.

Yep, that's one thing ShanaLynch seems to be (so far) good at. And that's talent evaluation. I think a big part of that is Kyle knows his offense and what it takes to make it work. He knows the kind of players he needs and wants. Other coaches - say like Nolan, or Singletary, who are offensively clueless - are really dependent on the OC knowing his job, and when that OC leaves, that particular version of the offense leaves the organization and the next guy comes in with different ideas and then next thing you know, that O Line that was perfect for OC 1 system now does not fit OC 2's offense. You lose a lot of draft capital that way.

And this is why, Giedi, the HC has to be an OC. Otherwise it ends up just as you said. You can't plan for the future because HCs are coming from the OCs, occasionally from the DCs. And when the guy moves on, to HC else where, you then have to totally reload your O players. It is the sine qua non of HCing. MUST BE an OC...or it screws you not just in playcalling, but worse, in drafting, FA ing. You expect your DC to say put. NOT OCs, however,.

Except for how it's currently split almost right down the middle. 17 current NFL head coaches are former-OCs.

You could make the identical argument with "losing draft capital" on defense when an offensive-minded HC loses his DC, which the numbers suggest is just as common.

An outstanding HC can handle losing his coordinators. He'll find appropriate replacements. A weak HC (i.e. every coach we've had in the last 20 years, minus mooch & harbaugh) cannot. The facts suggest that background has little to do with it.

Agree, any time you lose an offensive or defensive OC, you lose that vision for the squad they were in charge of. Then you almost have to start all over again, you lose draft capital and time. That's why it's important to have stability at all the high level coaching positions.

A good HC who knows both sides of the ball has a much better chance because he retains the vision and concepts of either side, so it's easier to retain the draft capital investments on both sides. Walsh was that way. He lost a lot of assistants but he never lost Seifert and the team continued to win.

I have hopes that Kyle is one of those rare coaches that can coach both sides of the ball. We shall see.
