Don't forget Theus...he also can play OG. That still leaves us one OL short. Cards have a guy on PS...who can't be as bad as any of these turnstiles.

If the Cards had a guy on the PS who was worth a s**t, they would bring him up because their OL was horrendous, worse than the 49ers easily. Mike Iupati plays like he just wants a paycheck and doesn't even try as a pass blocker anymore.

I think people are way overreacting to facing one of the best front sevens in football. Yeah the guard play isnt good, it wont be good but there is no real improvement out there to be found. Most NFL teams are struggling with OL issues. Go look how the Patriots OL got worked over by KC.

This cant be over stated....judging by week one, OL play is BAAAAAD this year. There is a huge talent void in the offensive trenches. Draft and Free agency price for a quality OL was already steep and going to get worse. Obviously we are going to have to bite the bullet and pay that price but some of these teams have been trying to fix it for years with little success. There isn't going to be a magic bullet out there on a practice squad or the like, were going to have to look within the team and find the best three man combo for the middle. I think we may have honestly saw the worst one on Sunday so it should get better, but it may end up that Hoyer being super immobile combined with this guard play is just going to be a boat anchor. I don't think Beathard is better than Hoyer persay...but at least you could look at moving the pocket etc to help with him in there. It creates a higher possibility we see him in there after 5 or 6 games for sure.
They can't be afraid to spend some serious $$ on the Oline in FA next offseason. Rookies coming into the league don't even know how to block yet so that route could end up a recipe for disaster.

Against better front sevens, this team will have issues, regardless of who they put in there, especially considering that guys are still figuring out this scheme. It is going to get uglier before it gets better and even then the limiting factor will be the guard play ultimately.

Actually PHX, i don't care where he or they come from. Your point is well taken and it is going to get worse with the all college O's now...and rare to find someone like CJ who grew up with the pro style QB offense. That means that most Collge Os are all going to be putting out non-professional OLs, so PRO OLs are going to become rare as hens teeth. I don't know aobut the guy on Cards, other than a reference to him earlier on in this thread.. Frankly i don't care where another OL comes from, but beadles and fusco were unacceptable Sun. Promote from within, Magnus, Theus even though he is primarily OT, he can play OG. Laken....well, just cross fingers for him. I hope he is better than fusco/beadles. Then there is Kilgore...who got handled most of the game. We need upgrades OG C OG. Maybe the Cards PS guy is worse, you know better than anyone else. But somewhere, on some PS there has to be one guy who is an improvement on what we have. I can see Magnus, laken, and Theus all doing better than our current 3. And if we improve just on OGs, then that might just help kilgore too.

This is rebuild yr as you well know, but it will be wasted if our OL doesn't function. And after Sun, OG to OG didnt function very well. Just keep scouting for guys on PS, claim them, work them out , if no good cut them out again. But we need to improve or we waste a full yr where we could have been training guys for ZBS. As it is now, our OL doesn't function except around both OTs. Heck Tiller is still unsigned and he did damn well last yr, tho he isn't a ZBS guy. So what, he could block. After trying Magnus, Laken, Theus, next on my list would be Tiller but I would do it soon. We KNOW he can block, especially next to Trenton. As for the guy on Cards PS, if he is a no go, then fine, get Tiller in here to try out.

Because he has played in a zone blocking scheme. Lombardi ran a very traditional ZBS his rookie year and Cooter runs a hybrid that combines zone and gap blocking concepts that utilizes quite a bit of outside zone.

Sorry all I've read is he's never played in a ZBS similar to shanny's scheme. I must have interpreted that wrong? And if he did well it didn't pan out very well

hope he can prove he was worth a 1st

Edit: this was the article I was referring to

"He's a smart guy. We've worked with him hard in the meeting rooms and stuff. But, any time you ask a guy to do something that he's never done in college or in the NFL, it's a little tough with few reps," Shanahan said.

Just imperative to protect Hoyer, or CJ is going to be starting 10-12 weeks earlier than we had wanted...and if he gets the same protection Hoyer did then we'll need our reserve QB...whoever that is...Trenton?

You want a starter OG or C? Better be in rd 1 and say no lower than mid rd. Now if Kyle can find one who learned ZBS, then we might get him lower. If a bona fide C , there may be none, or maybe 1 who could start. Otherwise you are buying a Mack for north of $10-12 mil /yr.. and if you noticed, he was it in FA last yr.
This dude better be better than Beadles. Didn't he stink it up in Detroit?
Yup...fail after 2 yrs. you know the stories of guys who change cities and suddenly they have new life? Man i am ready for one of those. Kyle is great with QBs, OLs, and WRs, TEs. Let's hope lake just needed a change of teams and more importantly, a change of coaches.
Love you doc but man... You're giving fuel for fire lol.

Hope, Smokes. Nothing but hope. And the reminder that it does happen. Does go the other way too, though. My money is still on Magnus starting Sun, because not word one has been said about him. And that is the way Lynch' and kyle work. Don't say anytihing and boom...they just did something they hadn't said a word about it. I'm sure I'll get reminded when I'm wrong, which happens a lot, but have you heard a peep about Magnus? Nope, me eihter. And that's why i think he starts Sun...probably for beadles but could be fusco. And no, I'm not betting any money on it.

At the very least, we find out early whether Laken or Magnus are worthy of starting. Actually the bar is set pretty low for replacing fusco or beadles. Strange though because beadles did tolerably well last yr. This yr? It's like WTF happened to him. As for fusco, he was cut by Minny for a reason. And we see why. Guy cannot block to save his soul.
