Even if he makes the full $6M a year, he'll have earned it with his play via incentives and top G's are making T $ now...$12-14M.

This is a slightly below average starting G contract for an average G who can get better.

When Suh kills Jimmy G I hope LTs hard work continues and we sign him to another 3 years

Suh is over-rated.
Line starts dominating on series 1 against the V'queens.
Just sit back and enjoy the season. Waaaaaay better off than we were 2 seasons ago.

Reasons for the extension:

1. The $10 million guaranteed over three years is a much softer cap hit than picking up his 5th year option. They already had to do so with AA and Ward, so this is financially sound.

2. He certainly didn't set the world on fire in his first few starts, but statistically and anecdotally, he improved throughout the season. There is no reason to suspect he won't make more improvements with a full off season.

3. This sends a message to the team. Work hard and you will be rewarded. Lost in the ecstasy of last year's finish is that fact that Lynch and Shanahan were tasked with shaping the culture of this team. The Baalke/Harbaugh/ Other Guys saga left this team a disjointed, dysfunctional, and disreputable mess. Tomlinson comes in, works hard, studies hard, improves, and leads by example. Other guys see him sign an extension and will potentially want to emulate him.

4. We are in VERY good cap shape. We can still go after big names next year regardless of this signing.

And this.
I just read where in the last 5 games, when Jimmy was the QB, Tomlinson was rated as a top 10 guard... Being a former first round pick, he clearly has some talent. Some guys just take a bit longer for that to come to fruition in the NFL. Of course, it doesn't hurt that he is probably getting really good coaching and that his skill set fits the scheme the team is running. Yes, it took him awhile last season to "get it". Let's all hope that he has.

I would hope that you Zoners would trust in the view of the front office and coaching staff. Obviously, they wouldn't have given him the extension if they didn't really believe that he was going to be a fine LG. To me, this is great news! It just confirms that the team feels really comfortable with him on that left side of the OL for at least the foreseeable future.

Cheers!

Great post Karma....couldn't agree more.
It doesn't help LT that he was playing next to garbage Kilgore. I thought LT was our 2nd best OL last year by the end. Not saying too much there but I wasn't disgusted with him like I was Kilgore/beadles

Then let's wait and see what he can do in an actual NFL system with an actual QB. I'm not gonna judge a player off a chip kelly offense with s**t QB play in his rookie yr with no off season lol

I hated Kilgore...dude found new and creative ways to end up on the ground or missing reads...

He was constantly doubling the wrong guy....like the Donald play that ended the Rams Game.

Not a fan of stats like this.... this could also mean QB play is better versus guard play being better. This is the trouble with PFF sometimes.

As long as he's playing better I don't care lol...good qb play will always make the OL better.

Until it doesn't. I'm not saying he wasn't playing better - what I'm saying is this stat doesn't show it. Was he playing better? Coaches can answer that better than I can I'm sure. In pass-pro, there were more "look out" blocks than I liked. Again, that could have been because what Kilgore was asked to do (protection calls). I just would count on these stats to demonstrate improvement without a doubt.

So averaged a hair over 1 hurry over 7 games, played next to Kilgore, came in 1 week before season opener and had to learn a new system and get in better shape for OZS... And we're complaining he came on strong at the end after grading out well as a top guard, even if potential with a TRUE QB?

Now will be going into year two with a full off season and musta had a solid off season to even get the extension? Cmon y'all, give Lynchahan the benefif of the doubt here. We're not hurting for money and if anything is insurance.
