Hate to be the negative one, but in Shanahan's outside zone scheme everything Tomlinson is decent at isn't asked of him, and everything he's supposed to be awful at is asked of him.

Beadles isn't better than a decent backup, but he's a much, much better scheme fit in the run game.

So, I don't like this trade that much, and am pretty confused by it.

I'm hoping I'm really missing something.

This is true but I think his lack of athletesism can be masked as a RG. Call power runs to to the right behind Brown and Tomlinson and stretch plays to the left behind mobile linemen Staley and Beadles.
I don't think you can hide a bad run blocking guard by making him the backside guard on a stretch run. That backside guard still has to move and not give up ground. Having an offensive tendency of outside zone to the left, and Power to the right is not good.

Another truth bomb. I'm so stewpid.

Might be a future center? I'm thinking a good powerful center that can stalemate nose tackles or get good position on a DT in the zone run might be useful in the future. I know he plays guard, and he might not have the athleticism needed in an outsize zone run scheme, but at the center position the DT/NT isn't always a reach block. Anyway, a 5th in 2019 wasn't too much to give up on a young O Lineman that may still develop into a good solid lineman. We do need the depth at the O Line, and that makes life easier for Hoyer. Kyle has done wonders with low round and undrafted offensive line picks, I guess the front office is gambling that he can do that with Tomlinson.

Hope this guy has something that will work for us in this scheme.

Have my doubts though. Seems like if he couldn't find a place with the Lions (not a great OL), this may be a lateral (at best) move - UNLESS the 49ers FO knows that the kid was playing out of position and/or in the wrong scheme. Maybe they think that that moving to the right side and in a Zone Blocking scheme will work out.

Fingers crossed.
me to. at least they did something to acknowledge what many of us already knew. that the o line needs help.

Me three, Ill curb any enthusiasm ftm n cross my fingers also.

Former 1st rounder traded after a few seasons seems suspect. But maybe the change of scenery will help. Reminds me of my skeptical Balky days lol, but will hope for the best.

Some people think he's only a #2 receiver. I see him as like a #1.5

I'm thinking he'll basically be our #1 and Marquise Goodwin will rise to the #2 spot.

I simmed a season on madden and Goodwin had like 15 tds and 70 something catches. His overall was barely like 71 lol. Fkn madden.

He isn't a bad run blocking guard. That is his strength.

Trent isn't mobile at RT but he can move. So can Tomlinson. It's just not what they excel at.
This guy just sounds like the Lions version of Chilo Rachal. No one in Detroit is sad to see him go, lmao.

Who are you and what have you done with cc?
should we be worried about staley to? that is why i hope they will look at another o lineman this weekend. i like the fact our fullback can play tight end. so maybe there is an extra roster spot for another lineman?

Yes you can, in a sense, so long as you are not predictable. Case in point Dan Audick, undersized left tackle for the 49ers. The did a lot of draws to his side of the line the slow down the pass rushers he could not handle, and toss plays to the left when the DE was overpowering him on inside moves. And also a lot of QB sprint rights to get the QB away from the left side of the rush and to tire the DE out. POint is that if this Tomlinson guy has *some* talent and not too many weaknesses, there are offensive calls and schemes that can be used to minimize his weaknesses.

Having said that, until I see him play, I reserve the right to change my opinion!
