This may have been brought up, but what type of $$ do you think it will take to sign JG to a long-term contract? I'm sure he won't settle for Hoyer's contract but will he command franchise tag type $$ with his limited NFL playing resume?
I'm thinking something like Bock got from the Texans 4 yrs $70 million maybe somewhere around $35 guaranteed. That's sam bradford money as well.

If you connect trade dots on 4 SF deals, you'll find 49ers got Reuben Foster and Jimmy Garoppolo simply for moving down 1 spot last April.
Did we trade the 2nd round pick we got from the Saints?

This trade has skepticism built into it. If they were 100% sure, NE could have asked for their 1st given what it was rumored the Browns offered last year.
Just my opinion but any other QB than the GOAT and his OCD scientific approach to maintaining his health and they keep Garoppolo.

Browns never offered a 1st the truth from what I've read (mike sliver who's bros with hue) is it was a 2nd and "change"
The facts were The pats tried to give jimmy g an extension this past off season, but they couldn't get a deal...I'm guessing but I doubt he wanted backup money and didn't want to sit behind Tom for the next 3 yrs, so after that they made a move with SF.
Will he be the next star or just an average qb only time will tell BUT from everything I've read and what people are saying NE didn't want to lose jimmy G but didn't really have a choice.

I dont buy that a 1st rounder was ever on the table for New England and certainly not in October. It came down to them taking the best offer available or watching Garoppolo walk at season's end.

Bilichick would probably be retiring anyhow once BRADY's done.. so why not win as much as he can NOW while he still has a QB..
In Bilichick's head, what's Grappy done thus far???
Could he only be the next Cassel... Scott Mitchell.. Doug Johnson... Steve Walsh...???
or, will he be the next STEVE YOUNG??
They tried to resign him all last off season apparently, but jimmy G didn't want half ass money or to sit behind tommy for the next 3 yrs...so they had 3 decisions 1. Let him walk and get a 3rd rd comp pick in 2019 2. Tag him and make your backup the 5th Highest paid qb in the league (and make more money than Tommy) 3. Trade him for a 2nd to a NFC west team.
Go look at what BB and everyone of those pats players have said about jimmy G. BIll Stated....
"First of all, I have a tremendous amount of respect for Jimmy. I couldn't ask for him to give us any more than he's given us. The 49ers are getting a good player, they're getting a good person, and they're getting a great teammate, and they're getting a good quarterback. And Jimmy's getting a good coach. His career is moving forward. He's a talented individual. He's a great person to coach. I met with him weekly, and again, I have a tremendous amount of respect for him."
I couldn't recall him ever saying any of that about his past qbs that got moved. You got guys like ninkovich saying his gonna be a star and has a bright future
http://www.nbcsports.com/boston/video/rob-ninkovich-future-very-bright-jimmy-garoppolo
I don't remember teammates saying s**t about matt cassel.
Also I agree with you it looks like Bill wants to hanging up when tommy retires so time to get the best players that can play right now and win as much as possible in the next 3 yrs.
it isn't a surprised to me if they tried to sign him again 3 years ago.. no one knew then how good Brady will still be..
This is not a shot to you bro, but look what the 49ers did w/Montana... had Steve Young the one that got traded to KC, and we end up with Derek Thomas, no doubt in my mind that we would have beaten Dallas in 91 and 92... and the two GB defeats would have never happened if Joe was our QB.
Bill realized now that Brady can still be around for at least 2 more year, (2018 & 2019) and like I said before, why not collect picks and keep on collecting players that would help him and Brady win a couple of more SUPER BOWLS.. ..

There is no sure thing but this is about as good of a trade for the 49ers as it gets. They get an 8-game audition of a potential starting caliber QB with the option to extend at their convenience for a 2nd round pick. Considering the going rate for a QB these days along with the 49ers ability to recoup that pick (should JimmyG pass the audition) easily available to them anyways. I love this move for San Francisco and I love this move for New England. Bethard gets to ease back into the role many always assumed he'd take (backup QB) and the QB issue might very well be resolved with a top 5 pick in hand to boot.
