They wanted to sell Garoppolo of to a team that A. had a solid second round pick to poach, B. needed a quarterback, and C. Had an acceptable quarterback on the roster that could serve as a suitable backup to Brady, now that they were unloading their only backup at the spot.

In a weird way, picking up Brian Hoyer actually was helpful to the 49ers. He's a vet so he doesn't go to waivers. Once he's cut, he's a free agent. So part of the deal here was probably a handshake deal with Hoyer to walk directly back over to New England.

49ers are the only team that meets A B and C.

Hoyer was originally part of the deal but the Pats nixed that after they considered the compensation pick ramifications. So they knew we were cutting him anyways.
Still can't believe we got jimmy g. He's gonna be able to hit our wide open receivers no problem

They dodged a bullet on McCarron. A rare time where incompetence pays off.

This. A 2nd and 3rd for AJ?

I agree, but there is a difference. You control a high draft pick for 80 games on a rookie contract. We control Garoppolo for 8 games.

True point and if it's a first round pick, you have the option for that 5th year. But for us in particular, this is the WCO so you know Kyle would use 2-3 years just properly developing him hoping he pans out.

I'd take that trade off any day.

BTW I'm saying that not concerned about them getting a long term deal done over the next 1.5 years...maybe 2.5 given our cap situation.

For real. Browns were definitely trying to get AJ M.

If he was that great the Pats wouldn't have traded him

I'm not sure about that, however it's clear they don't think he's a replacement for Brady long-term

That's because Brady sold his sole for the ability to play forever.

He played with a whole lot of talent around him and managed to look like a generic game manager. His best game was against the terrible 49ers and that Mangini trainwreck. Meh.

didn't want Jimmy G anyway. I don't think we would be any better with him and is still a prospect. The 49'ers might be worse than us. Good fcking luck.
Cousins would be a different deal for me. He's a legit top ten QB and he see's the whole field. I would give a #1 pick for Cousins today

Halfway through the season already, so by the time Jimmy G shows some potential with his new team, the team has to decide on a long term contract that could bite them in the ass.
No thanks at this point in the season.
Maybe back in March, but not in late October.

Garropolo is not, is not worth a 2nd. He hasn't proven a thing. Besides, who's he gonna throw to?

LOL at all the bitter Browns fans. Had they traded for Garoppolo they would all be psyched as hell right now.

The front office wouldn't have submitted the trade to the league office by the 4 pm deadline

Truly is. And don't they change week to week?
Anyone order their Garoppolo Jersey yet? Lol

One with a super bowl seal on it.
Patriots had to choose Brady or Jimmy G. I find it interesting that they're the 1st team to choose the 40 year old over the future, I really didn't think they'd do that, but it's Brady. Kraft, BB made a decision with their heart and to let Tom end his career in NE on his terms whenever that is.

Doesn't hurt that Brady is still chugging along at a high level.

Schemes remain intact, fundamental changes aren't made week to week. Having said that, offenses continually evolve and nuances aimed at exploiting specific weaknesses in an opponent or masking weaknesses in the offensive unit (such as the loss of Staley) are introduced. It's almost impossible to overstate the importance of schematic continuity for young and developing quarterbacks.
