Yeah, I'm with you. Let him learn the playbook without rushing him to get on the field. Beathard can hold the fort until Jimmy's ready to go.

Wait, what? Exactly what would your plan be in the offseason when his contract is up? $23 million on the tag? Or just because? Am I the only person who remembers how that worked out with Matt Flynn? Let him prove his worth. Unless you want a QB that can only function under perfect circumstances, that is...

I wish he was ready today and have him start on Sunday, but that's not reality. He needs to learn at least enough to function on the field. That could take the rest of the season to accomplish.
what, lol

he's not retarded

Lol, retarded? It's supposedly a thick playbook. So, might take two months to learn and two months for the OL to get healthy again.

My gripe then, specifically, concerns cost. And, not the overall cost, but the opportunity cost of giving up a second round pick for someone you could have had (at least the opportunity for) in FA for cash alone. Be honest, JG is not turning this team into a Super Bowl contender, and that is, after all, the entire point / ultimate goal. The 49ers are still many players away from that. At least two draft / FA cycles, assuming a fairly high percentage of successful decisions.

The tradeoff is they now avoid a Brock Osweiler situation. Osweiler flamed out almost immediately with the Texans after signing a big $ deal.

If Garoppolo pulls a Osweiler - the 49ers can cut him loose after this year with limited damage.

For what it's worth I expect Garoppolo to be the franchise QB the 49ers are looking for.

Totally get a period of learning. But he HAS to see action before seasons end. I don't know when, ideally after our bye. But practice only reveals so much. Need to see how he is under adversity.

The high second round pick means he at minimum is getting the tag- only difference of him playing this year or not is us being comfortable locking him into a longterm FQB contract and what his worth actually is (top 10, top 15, top 20)

Gay for Garoppolo?

Imagine how much p***y he gets?

Lower body is built too, won't be easy to sack.

They were comparing his release vs Brady's on the telecast (2016). idk what it means just thought I'd share.

Good. I bet he had enough of this...

Once again, there is zero guarantee that the Patriots wouldn't have traded Garoppolo to some other team. Zero guarantee that he'd ever be available for the 49ers to sign, much the same as Cousins. You hope that he'd be available, but that would be far from a given and if you like a quarterback enough, then you make that trade 100 out of 100 times to bring that guy into your building, have him start learning the offense, developing relationships with the coaching staff, the front office, the players on the team, becoming familiar with the organization and getting comfortable with everything while you're able to evaluate him in your scheme, playing with your players and getting a much better idea of what he can ultimately do in your offense.

Looking at this team's track record with 2nd rounders over the past 10 years, I'd make that deal every day of the week, especially considering the 49ers still have a 2nd round pick and are now potentially in position to trade back with a QB hungry team, recoup that 2nd rounder and get a whole lot more back since using that early pick on a QB is no longer a concern.

The 49ers are still many players away from that. At least two draft / FA cycles, assuming a fairly high percentage of successful decisions.

And no piece is bigger nor more crucial than the quarterback. You plug in Garoppolo, upgrade the OL this offseason, add another weapon or two and if he is what you hope he can be then you are suddenly a much more competitive team than you have been this season.

But I don't disagree with you.

The problem I have is with the incoherent train of thought associated with the timing. If what you said is true (and, as noted, I believe it to be true) then it was applicable last off season. And thus, the 49ers should have given up the goose then and gone all in to get their FQB. They clearly did not go all in, and it worked out for them. Kudos.

I don't have a specific issue with the outcome, per se, but if it is a risky move to wait now, then it was an equally risky move to wait this past off season.

Nice! I was wondering what his throwing circle looked like. Jimmy's is very compact.

I brought up throwing circles in the Sam Darnold thread, but I don't think anyone knew what the hell I was talking about. BTW, Darnold's throwing circle is huge.
