It almost doesn't matter when contracts are signed. They look like a good deal for awhile and then the player decides he's not making enough and threatens to sit out if they don't give him a raise or extend his contract. I won't be surprised if Jimmy has a couple of good seasons that he either threatens to sit or the front office tears up his contract to 'make it more in line with current standards'. We've seen this over and over. It's like the owners are the only ones obligated to honor the contract where as the player just threatens to sit. The owner can play hardball but then the season can be in jeopardy. Owners will give in because most of them have massive egos and want to win. Salaries will keep going up until fans start turning away at the turnstiles and so far that doesn't seem to be happening. What we are seeing is a corporate crowd with lots of money and maybe not as much passion at the games. They can afford to pay a ton for season tickets and not show up if the on field product isn't good. Us old Candlestick guys sat through games no matter how bad the team was. Even in the mid 70's we were getting 35-40k in the seats.

The owners are obliged to honor the contract ?... wtf... football contracts are mostly not garuanteed. When a player doesn't perform up to standards the owners have no hesitation in cutting a player. you have to remember, a contract is a two way street, if a player out performs his contract he should be compensated in the same way he is thrown away like garbage if he under performs. The owners are billionaires and the players are millionaires. I haven't seen one owner in the endzone yet..... people act like the game isn't about the players. the reason there is so much money is because of tv contracts. players are just now getting there fair share of the pot. people on wall street who work at firms get billion dollar bonuses. I don't see any one complaining about that.

They still honor the contract. When contracts are signed part of the money is guaranteed. That part is paid. They can't honor the whole thing because injuries that end careers would bankrupt teams. MLB and NBA teams get stuck with dead money all the time and it can hamstring a team for years. Too much dead money and you can't afford to sign free agents. The players understand when they sign that only part of it is guaranteed so it is up to the agent to get as much as possible. As far as getting released when the player doesn't perform. Well that's part of the deal. I don't think any player gets a no cut contract. You say he's thrown away 'like garbage' when he can't perform. Look at how many people on this forum call players garbage all the time and are always saying to dump this guy and that guy.

people say dump this guy or dump that guy but these are professional athletes who train and work hard for basically 12 months a year to put themselves in bodily harm to play a spectator sport. All I'm saying is these guys take risks of ending up maimed for life with brain injuries and other ailments. this is not high school football. and by the way I believe baseball and basketball contracts are full guaranteed. these are not toys we play with on electric football sets. this is real life. whats a brain injury for life worth to you?

Yes it is, but if the TV ad revenue go down. How will the TV guys pay the NFL?

At some point one would expect the line to start leveling off a bit but it seems to defy all logic.

The demand for football is still there, but conventional TV providers are dying off and being replaced by Netflix, Amazon, etc. That's where the new money will come from.

That makes sense. I wouldn't put it past the NFL to start thier own internet station too.

Not necessarily. Sling TV is owned by Dish. DTVNow is owned by DirectTv. They are still big players when it comes to live sports. Best user interface that I have experienced is probably PSVue and Sling. DTVNow is horrible.

Right, dying off was the wrong wording. Transitioning to on-demand would have been more apropos.

Jimmy's contract is starting to not look so expensive.

It's the same with Ford's. The new game is now being the first one to up the contract for a position early in the off-season since most others will then have to match or increase. Ford got his then you saw every pass rusher after that get more.

It's why it makes sense to get Buckner's deal done sooner than later.

I remember with Jimmy's he was only the highest paid QB for what, 2 months? Then Matt Ryan got his extension which was for 30 APY, then Rodgers got his.

About ford though I'm assuming we're locked in for a ton of money if he gets hurt. Which is his only real concern.

100 percent agree on buck. We blew it on that one. Could've been paying him under 20 a year on an extension. Now it's gonna be a s**t ton.

Yup and now Russ getting 7.5 more a year than jimmy
Signing Jimmy at that price was a steal for QBs.

Lets wait to see him play a full season before we make that statement.

https://www.espn.com/blog/atlanta-falcons/post/_/id/22186/falcons-matt-ryan-dug-deeper-to-prepare-for-2016-season

Ryan visited Tom House and Adam Dedeaux of the acclaimed 3DQB training facility in Los Angeles after hearing recommendations.

"I think it's a combination of things," Ryan said. "I think it's getting your feet right, working on positioning of where your feet want to be.

An example of the exercises Ryan went through included measuring velocity and distance based on body positioning, such as being able to throw 80 percent of his max distance while on his knees. There was a rapid-fire swinging bat exercise which focuses on velocity and rotational strength. The shoulder work included light dumbbells and weighted balls.

If Ryan can just clean up the red-zone interceptions and turnovers, maybe the Falcons will be able to go a little deeper instead of missing the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season.

Spoiler: Ryan was the MVP that year.
