I read "Wish" needs to learn traditional punting so he doesn't get blocked as often as he did in college. Rookie WRs rarely start from day one. Especially drafted lower. They have to learn a lot and takes a year or two. It can happen (usually due to lack of options) but it is not likely.
Greg Little, Cody Ford, Dalton Risner, etc. There were plenty of linemen available we could develop or plug and play. Instead we have too many WRs and a unorthodox punter. Staley isn't getting any younger too so we need to plan for that.

Drafting a punter that high was dumb regardless.

I don't hate Matthews imo he's got an uphill battle to make the squad, if he does make cool. All I've stated is he's not a lock to make it over some of the guys who have been in this offense. He's also always injured and hasn't done s**t in yrs. if it was some other position (like OL) you'd be complaining about SF bringing in some injury prone guy and making it all negative.
when I'm referring to "what guys" I'm asking you who from last yr? All the starters were hurt at one point or another.
We didn't expect garcon to be hurt all yr, we didn't expect Taylor's back to be all f**ked up for a yr, we didn't think Pettis to have an MCL sprain, we didn't think Goodwin was gonna lose a baby and f**k up his quad etc...NOW they finally have depth.

Gotta wait to see it, gladly eat crow...this team wasn't in a position to be spending a 4th rd pick on a punter imo.

The only reason why I don't agree with this is that when I look at our entire OL, only 2 49er picks are starting. The rest are FA. And even if I look at projected depth, I can only find two picks, possibly 3. The rest are all FA.
Despite Garnett being drafted when Kelly was coach, Baalke was the ultimate say and it's been known widely that Baalke intended to move on even from Kelly and had his own personnel agenda (coach Baalke).
The chances of having more than one good to great WR on a team in today's NFL is just as unlikely as it would be to have all 1st round picks on an OL, particularly with FA. I'm not okay getting OL to develop because we haven't shown that we can develop OL yet (Magnuson, Williams, etc.). So while we wait do we let Jimmy get hit?
I'd vote no on that proposal.
We have to be fair here. The current regime has had 3 drafts and 3 free agency periods. At first glance this may seem like plenty of time to tweak a roster where it needs to be. As 49er fans we know that this team needed a lot more than that. We needed a franchise QB. The most sought after and valued position in the nfl. We also needed a revamp of our entire team. A bad offensive line with one of the greatest players to ever grace the field in Joe Staley but, that's it. A relatively bad d-line with some recent high picks with potential but, no real proven stars. Two of the harder to find but, also most important position groups in the league. I mean I wanted to believe we could put it back together quick as i'm a tried and true homer. Reality has proven otherwise. We think we have our Franchise QB who this thread is dedicated to. We think we have our franchise pass rushers and a very scary defensive line with proven players and potential stars. We have a ravamped team but, we haven't shown it in the win column yet. We will.
Now, we haven't necessarily ignored the o-line. We invested the 9th overall pick in 2018 on Mike McGlinchey. A tackle who the team thinks can be a franchise player and possibly replace the great Staley. That same year we gave (if I remember correctly), the best available center a 47.5 million dollar incentive to come to the 49ers. While Richburg hasn't lived up to that contract; we did make the attempt and he definitely has a chance to bounce back being a bit more healthy. This shows that they do value the line at least this much. However Richburg plays this year there isn't a good argument against more help along the o-line to put it mildly. The point is we have invested heavily into two of the four positions we needed to fill here. We nailed it with Mike and Weston seems to be leaning towards an okay stop gap or a flat out miss. I don't think you can judge the front office when it comes to the value they place on the line either way. Also Garnett is one guy that has been injured who might not have it, Richburg is a vet who hasn't been here very long, and there isn't too much beyond them. I don't think we can judge their ability to coach up ol players yet either. The biggest thing that Belicheck has had is time. Lets give these guys a chance to really dig into this line and pick players of value along the interior and see how they coach em up. My opinion is that outside of Richburg and McGlinchey everyone else is filler while they are addressing other positions. No one they're sold on or tied to.

What does that have to do with the Wish pick? LOL, you honestly think an OL drafted in the 4th round would have single-handedly protected him this year?
I'm starting a list of Doubting Thomases. See you in September!

with the holes on our roster we could have picked anyone in that spot who may have helped us. and signed or drafted a punter later. i hope he is the weapon all think he will be. i hope he is a good holder for whoever kicks for us. sad to break the news but i have been a doubting thomas of this team under jed for the last few years and little has been done to make me change my tune now. i like many parts of the draft. i think we had a very very good free agent spree. and i think i am being optimistic to say this team should win 8 games at the max. anything else is gravy,, anything less. well
