How is the talent on offense "vastly improved" since 2019?

Offensive line: maybe slightly better but time will tell
Running game: no improvement
Tight end: no improvement
Wide receiver: slight improvement if any

Where is this "vast improvement" that you speak of?

Well we did vastly improve at QB.
If healthy, the position groups on offense could definitely be vastly improved.

Running game: Mostert/Coleman/McKinnon vs Mostert/Sermon/Gallman...advantage 2021
Oline: Advantage 2021
WR: rookie Deebo/Sanders/Bourne vs Deebo/Aiyuk/Hurd...advantage 2021

Yeah I fully expect to be top 3 in rushing this year. And much better on short yardage plays with Sermon and Banks.

Are you kidding me. The online is better at Center, LT and RG. Mike Person was a turnstile and Joe Staley was old and hobbled.
At RB: Mostert, Sermon, Gallman, Hasty is an upgrade over Brieda, Mostert, and Coleman mainly because Brieda and Mostert were always hurt.

Yeah, on paper, comparatively, the pass protection (and mobility at QB that includes Jimmy now) should be far better and a running back staple that can catch as well as run inside more, experience at WR and if Hurd or a higher end 3WR emerges, it definitely can be an improved unit. Vastly? Maybe too strong a word as we snuck up big time on a lot of teams especially with the running game. That probably won't happen again.
I didn't realize Jimmy had his own thread.

But Stafford was out as an option before February started. They were looking at Dalton/Flacco much later. There is no 'win now' message with either of them.

A lot of those FA made nothing this yr regardless. No money out there for a lot of the guys we resigned (outside of Trent).

I don't think having not having Jimmy swayed them either way…Shanahan and familiarity probably played a bigger part imo.

I disagree. For all accounts, Jimmy is very well liked AND just helped the team reach the SB. That definitely plays a part and I believe that if a lot of those guys knew Jimmy was being replaced by Dalton or Flacco (no chance whatsoever at winning a ring in 2021), they'd have chosen to go elsewhere.

Yeah, I think it was more Stafford + Lance as most ideal for ShanaLynch. But I'm sure they explored all options and there were a lot of moving targets. They probably weren't sure IF they could keep Jimmy plus resign every single player back...even had to ask Jed for permission. Plus they weren't sure exactly how Jimmy would respond which could have gotten ugly fast. When they started looking at Dalton and Flacco, it was probably more due diligence IF they felt they could trade Jimmy.

You think Dalton could win the division and the NFCC this year with the 49ers?

Correct that was possibly the plan though….only way I see SF rolling into this season with a combo of Jimmy G and Flacco/Dalton is if they were unable to trade up or unable to trade for a stud vet.

they could have told both those dudes, hey we will get back to you after the draft. They didn't wait and SF just kept Jimmy.

not a chance they don't send 3 1sts to Miami because they signed Dalton. That's been my debate.

And my debate is that it was entirely possible that could have happened if the Bears weren't idiots.

Well agree to disagree there....IMO the only possible way we're sitting with Dalton/Jimmy right now is if they weren't able to move up in the draft or trade for a better vet. I wouldn't be shocked if they actually drafted Mac Jones if they stayed at 12. They'd be right around 2/3rd in the league in money spent on QBs in that scenario...with freaking Dalton/Jimmy lol woof.

They weren't signing any vet backup until after the draft IMO.

FWIW Tony Pauline of PFN said this...

https://www.ninersnation.com/2021/5/7/22425087/49ers-report-shanahan-wanted-dalton-and-was-upset-when-he-got-away

They wanted to sign Andy Dalton in free agency as their veteran quarterback and then trade Garoppolo and draft Lance. I'm told Shanahan was pretty upset when they did not land Dalton

I do get why Dalton chose the Bears at that time....now he's in the same situation he would have been if he went to SF.

There is no chance the running game has "improved" since 2019, let alone vastly improved. Is the offensive line better this season? Should be. Is it substantially better? Don't see it. WR is a wash. Is Aiyuk better now than Emmanuel Sanders was. Debatable, and I Love Aiyuk.

I just dont see this vast improvement. It doesn't exist.. Saying what we have now is vastly better is just another way to minimize what Jimmy had around him in 2019.
O-line is the biggest improvement and should be significant. Loved joe but there were times he was a liability Trent is a pretty big upgrade at the points in their careers they were at. Mack is a significant upgrade to richburg and has intricate knowledge of the system. The right side will be interesting I believe banks will be on par with the chance to be a significant upgrade. If mcglinchy does not improve significantly from two years ago coming off a terrible year he may be done with the 49ers. There should be a serious fire under his ass. Running back is absolutely upgraded with Trey sermon and we still have have the same lead back but he should be fully healthy. Wide receiver you can call a wash if you'd like but Debo didn't figure it out till 75% through the season and by all accounts aiyuk is poised to break out as a top 10 we in the league. Tight end is a wash but also the best in the league. Quarterback is also a significant upgrade we have jimmy playing for his future nfl career (serious fire under his ass) or a rookie with physical skills that are light years ahead of most.

play calling is one area I could see 2019 being better. Shanny was on fire literally every game. During the off-season other teams study and catch up plus there are about 3 additional coaches running the same stuff copycat league. I am confident that shanny will adjust and come with new material. Especially if Trey gets on the field after 6-7 games.

You think Dalton or Jimmy actually plays a full season as a starter (or Jimmy even stays healthy for that matter)? Both are bridge QBs and eventual backups on their current teams. Stop looking at it as Jimmy or whatever backup they would have signed is suppose to lead the team to the NFCC. This is Lance's squad whether you like it or not.
